212 HISTORICAL RECORDS OF THE1856. In October the establishment of the regimentwas altered to 1000 rank and file, of which theservice companies had 800. This was againchanged in December, when the service companieswere reduced to 600 rank and file, while thedepot had 400.1857. The companies remained at Berwick until the3rd of March, when they received orders to goto Preston to be incorporated with the depotbattalion commanded by Lieutenant-ColonelSmith, C.B. On leaving Berwick, the mayorand the sheriff expressedto Lieutenant-ColonelRawstorne, who was in command, the generalrespectwhich the conduct of all ranks had inspiredamong the citizens, and the public regretwhich was felt at the removal of the 91st.On arrival at Preston, two companies wereordered to embark in the Minna transport tojoin the service companies at Corfu ;at the sametime nearly 100 rank and file received their discharge,while the remainder, consisting of twentyonesergeants and 206 men, were on the 30th ofMarch incorporated with the depdt battalion atPreston. This closes the historyof the old" " reserve battalion ; for although they were notcalled by that name after 1855, the depotcompanies were really the same battalion.

The regiment was moved duringthis month from Gosport into the CambridgeBarracks at Portsmouth. Nothing of specialimportance occurred for the next few months.In September the battalion was engaged withthe rest of the garrison in celebrating the fastday,which was appointed to be kept in Portsmouthand the neighbourhood by the bishop of
