In October <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regimentwas altered to 1000 rank and file, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>service companies had 800. This was againchanged in December, when <strong>the</strong> service companieswere reduced to 600 rank and file, while <strong>the</strong>depot had 400.1857. The companies remained at Berwick until <strong>the</strong>3rd <strong>of</strong> March, when <strong>the</strong>y received orders to goto Preston to be incorporated with <strong>the</strong> depotbattalion commanded by Lieutenant-ColonelSmith, C.B. On leaving Berwick, <strong>the</strong> mayorand <strong>the</strong> sheriff expressedto Lieutenant-ColonelRawstorne, who was in command, <strong>the</strong> generalrespectwhich <strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> all ranks had inspiredamong <strong>the</strong> citizens, and <strong>the</strong> public regretwhich was felt at <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong>.On arrival at Preston, two companies wereordered to embark in <strong>the</strong> Minna transport tojoin <strong>the</strong> service companies at Corfu ;at <strong>the</strong> sametime nearly 100 rank and file received <strong>the</strong>ir discharge,while <strong>the</strong> remainder, consisting <strong>of</strong> twentyonesergeants and 206 men, were on <strong>the</strong> 30th <strong>of</strong>March incorporated with <strong>the</strong> depdt battalion atPreston. This closes <strong>the</strong> history<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old" " reserve battalion ; for although <strong>the</strong>y were not<strong>ca</strong>lled by that name after 1855, <strong>the</strong> depotcompanies were really <strong>the</strong> same battalion.
