9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 199was during <strong>the</strong>se operationsthat an attack by 1852.a body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rebels upon Elands Post was gallantlyrepulsed by a small detachment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong>under Captain Wright (<strong>the</strong> survivor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Birkenhead).The enemy appeared in considerable force, andmanoeuvred with all <strong>the</strong> skill <strong>of</strong> disciplined soldiers,extending, advancing, and retiring bysound <strong>of</strong>bugle. After endeavouring almost successfullyto draw <strong>the</strong> little garrison into an ambus<strong>ca</strong>de,<strong>the</strong>y sounded <strong>the</strong> " close " and <strong>the</strong> " advance,"and moved on to <strong>the</strong> fort.Captain Wright, withonly twenty- three men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong>,<strong>the</strong>n marchedout to meet <strong>the</strong>m, and, being joined by a party <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Kat River levy, drove <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong>f with loss.The strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy was computedat 130mounted and 200 on foot.On <strong>the</strong> 30th <strong>of</strong> July<strong>the</strong> battalion marchedfrom Blinkwater under Major Forbes, on an expedition,which lasted during <strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong>August, across <strong>the</strong> Kei to <strong>ca</strong>pture <strong>ca</strong>ttle from <strong>the</strong>chief, Kreli.
