With <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boat <strong>the</strong>two pontoons were attached to ropes and madeto work backwards and forwards, by which means<strong>the</strong> whole force and itsbaggage were <strong>ca</strong>rried overin four days.After <strong>the</strong> troops had crossed, Captain Rawstorneremained on <strong>the</strong>Orange River, with a party <strong>of</strong>men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong>, to guard <strong>the</strong> drift, and keepopen communi<strong>ca</strong>tion with <strong>the</strong> colony. On <strong>the</strong>27th <strong>of</strong> July <strong>the</strong> troopsstarted at daylight, andafter a march <strong>of</strong> twenty miles en<strong>ca</strong>mped on <strong>the</strong>plains near Philippolis at Beulois Hoek. Whilemarching at daybreak on <strong>the</strong> 28th, swarms <strong>of</strong>grey locusts were encountered, almost obscuring<strong>the</strong> sky. Passing Philippolis, a village <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Griqua Kaffirs, <strong>the</strong> force after a twenty-milemarch en<strong>ca</strong>mped for <strong>the</strong> night, continuing <strong>the</strong>march at dawn on <strong>the</strong> 29th.
