On the sameday eighty-one men of the 91st, under the commandof Captain Hogg, 7th Dragoon Guards,started for Tambookieland, to punish the chiefMampassa, who had now joined in the waragainst the British. The party was thus employedtill the 19th of October, when it arrived at FortBeaufort, having been engagedin several affairsand skirmishes with the enemy during that time,and in one of which the spirited conduct ofEnsign Fitzgerald, of the 91st, was particularlynoticed. The detachment marched on the 23rdof October to Phoonah's Kloof, and thence toPost Victoria on the 9th of December.On the 23rd of August a body of Hottentotsand Fingoes that had been sent out on two days'patrol, were, when returning to Fort Cox, suddenlyattacked on the Amatola Mountains by a superiorforce of Kaffirs, and were on the eve of beingoverpowered by them, when the opportune arrivalof 100 men of the 91st, hastily despatched totheir support, rescued them from their danger,and throwing themselves in the face of the foe,directed such a volley into them as to compelthem to beat a precipitate retreat, and the partyreturned to camp without further molestation.
