162 HISTORICAL RECORDS OF THE1847 On the night of the 29th of Julymade an attack on the camp,silenced by the fire of the troops,the Kaffirsbut were soonwhich causedthem quickly to retire ;and by daybreak nextmorning the division, more than 2000 strong,with two guns, ascended the summit of theAmatola range, the enemy everywhere fleeingbefore them. The following day the divisionproceeded toFort Cox, with a view of interceptingthe retreating foe.This fort is situated aboutfifteen miles from Block Drift, amongst the rockyand wooded fastnesses of the Amatola Mountains,and was a post of considerable importance, reachedby a long and tedious ascent up a wooded acclivity,shortly after crossing the Keiskamma.On the 4th of August the force again took upthe pursuit, and for four days was engaged inscouringthe kloofsand hills towards the sourceof the Keiskamma River, and up to the BuffaloMountains.Findingthat the Kaffirs had eludedtheir search, and meeting no enemyagainst,the troopsto contendreturned to Fort Cox on the7th of August. On the 16th a patrol of 150 ofthe 91st, with a party of the 27th Regiment, and100 Fingoes ascended the Amatola Mountains,and passing into the valley below, returned to

On the sameday eighty-one men of the 91st, under the commandof Captain Hogg, 7th Dragoon Guards,started for Tambookieland, to punish the chiefMampassa, who had now joined in the waragainst the British. The party was thus employedtill the 19th of October, when it arrived at FortBeaufort, having been engagedin several affairsand skirmishes with the enemy during that time,and in one of which the spirited conduct ofEnsign Fitzgerald, of the 91st, was particularlynoticed. The detachment marched on the 23rdof October to Phoonah's Kloof, and thence toPost Victoria on the 9th of December.On the 23rd of August a body of Hottentotsand Fingoes that had been sent out on two days'patrol, were, when returning to Fort Cox, suddenlyattacked on the Amatola Mountains by a superiorforce of Kaffirs, and were on the eve of beingoverpowered by them, when the opportune arrivalof 100 men of the 91st, hastily despatched totheir support, rescued them from their danger,and throwing themselves in the face of the foe,directed such a volley into them as to compelthem to beat a precipitate retreat, and the partyreturned to camp without further molestation.
