9 1ST ARGYLLSHIEE HIGHLANDERS. 161a strong patrol <strong>of</strong> 250 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> Regiment, a 1846.party <strong>of</strong> Royal Sappers and Miners, with one gun,40 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cape Corps, 400 mounted burghers, and200 Fingoes, started from Block Drift under <strong>the</strong>command <strong>of</strong> Major Campbell, and having scouredall <strong>the</strong> klo<strong>of</strong>s and valleys to <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Amatola Mountains, and meeting with no opposition,returned to <strong>the</strong> post.On <strong>the</strong> 15th, 200 men<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> Regiment, 200 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 27th Regiment,a company <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Sappers and Miners andtwo guns, with 43 Cape Corps, and 600 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>burghers and Hottentot and Fingoe levies, under<strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> Colonel Hare, again patrolled <strong>the</strong>Amatola Mountains ;but meeting with no opposition,<strong>the</strong> enemy only appearing on <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> hills, <strong>the</strong> force returned to Block Drift earlyin December, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> proceeded to FortBeaufort, where <strong>the</strong>y remained until <strong>the</strong> renewal<strong>of</strong> hostilities in July, 1847. 1347.On <strong>the</strong> 27th <strong>of</strong> July, 1847, <strong>the</strong> reserve battalion<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong>, 11 <strong>of</strong>ficers and 250 men, formed part<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first division under <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> ColonelHare, and havingleft 90 men to maintain BlockDrift, proceeded to <strong>the</strong> Tyumie flats. CaptainWard was appointed commandant <strong>of</strong> Beaufort in<strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lieutenant-governor.11
