One was put sixyards <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> gallant fellows, who, not quitediscouraged,stillkept quiet. The remainingKaffirs rolled <strong>the</strong>mselves up in <strong>the</strong>ir blanketsand went to sleep.The sentry stood for a fewminutes, looked round, <strong>the</strong>n sat down for a fewmore minutes, looked round again, and <strong>the</strong>nwrapped himself in his blanket and slept peacefullytoo. Walsh and Eeilly, as may be imagined,did not give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> chance <strong>of</strong> waking, but made<strong>of</strong>f.They <strong>the</strong>n made a wide circuit, and afternumerous es<strong>ca</strong>pes from detection, once havingbeen challenged by a Kaffir sentinel who was notasleep, <strong>the</strong>y <strong>ca</strong>me to <strong>the</strong> Keiskamma River, and,knowing that all <strong>the</strong> fords were guarded by <strong>the</strong>Kaffirs, <strong>the</strong>y had to cross by swimming, finallyreaching Fort Cox shortly before daylight. Here<strong>the</strong>ir dangers were not over, for <strong>the</strong> sentries,not expecting anything but Kaffirs, treated <strong>the</strong>mto some rapid file firing. Again <strong>the</strong>y lay downin shelter untildaybreak, when, being recognizedas British soldiers, <strong>the</strong>y were warmly welcomed,and delivered <strong>the</strong>ir important despatches.
