9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 157arrived for <strong>the</strong> governor, Sir Peregrine Maitland,1846.escorted by eighteen mounted burghers, witha request from <strong>the</strong> commandant atFort Beaufort,that it should be sent on as soon as possible.The communi<strong>ca</strong>tion between Block Drift andFort Cox, where <strong>the</strong> governor was, was completelycut <strong>of</strong>f, and accordingly volunteers were <strong>ca</strong>lledfor to <strong>ca</strong>rry <strong>the</strong> despatch.Two men immediately<strong>ca</strong>me forward, Robert Walsh and Thomas Reilly,and to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> despatch was entrusted. Theyleft Block Drift shortly after dark, and proceededon <strong>the</strong>ir perilous journey, dressed in uniform,and with <strong>the</strong>ir muskets. All went well for <strong>the</strong>first six miles, although <strong>the</strong>y found <strong>the</strong>mselvesin <strong>the</strong> vicinity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kaffirs. Suddenly, onentering a wooded valley at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Amatola Mountains, <strong>the</strong>y <strong>ca</strong>me right upon aKaffir en<strong>ca</strong>mpment, and had hardly time to throw<strong>the</strong>mselves on <strong>the</strong> ground in <strong>the</strong> thick underwood,when <strong>the</strong>y found to <strong>the</strong>ir horror, that <strong>the</strong>natives had heard <strong>the</strong>ir footsteps, as <strong>the</strong> latterrushed into <strong>the</strong> thicket to look for<strong>the</strong> intruders.Fortunately, a porcupine was sighted,and <strong>the</strong>Kaffirs, evidently satisfied, returned to <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>ca</strong>mp,muttering that it was an ' Easterfooke,' Angliceporcupine, that had alarmed <strong>the</strong>m.
