Indoing so, Corporal Morris halted within ten yardsof the body, and shot a Kaffir through the headwhile he was in the act of cutting poor Stuart'sthroat. CorporalSherrock also turned and shotanother Kaffir through the body, who was tryingto extract the ammunition from the pouch.Amongthe slain was afterwards discovered asoldier of the 91st, who had probably been burnedto death by the savages, as his remains werefound bound to the pole of a waggon and horriblydefaced by fire. The Kaffirs admit that theytied their victim to a stake and literally flayedhim alive ;the little children being permitted toassist in torturing him. Concerning the attack on Blinkwater postColonel Napier says, "The post happened tobe at the time occupied by a small party of the91st, under command of a sergeant.rushed on asusual in overwhelmingThe Kaffirsnumbers tothe attack, but were steadily repulsed ;and findingall their efforts useless against the gallantlittle band who so resolutely held their own, wereat lastfain to retreat, with a considerable loss inkilled and wounded, most of whom however theycarried off.
