9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 147as above described in Major Campbell'sofficial 1846.despatch, that officer was joined by ColonelSomerset and the restof the force, and a bivouacwas formed forthe night on the Amatola flats,in the shape of a hollow square, in order toprotect the 1800 cattle captured by ColonelSomerset's party.On the morning of the 17th the force movedtowards Burn's Hill, and on approaching theKeiskamma, an advanced party of about eightymen, under command of Captain Scott of thereserve battalion, 91st, was sent to reinforceMajor Gibson, 7th Dragoon Guards, who hadbeen left in charge of some waggons at Burn'sHill. The latter officer's despatchrecounts theevents which led to the party being sent inadvance as follows :" About 7 o'clock, just as I had diminishedthe size of my camp, we were attacked by aconsiderable body of Kaffirs, whom we beat offin six or seven minutes, I am sorry to say, withthe loss of four men of the 91st killed, and fourwounded."On the 17th Major Gibson, in compliance withColonel Somerset's instructions, moved fromBurn's Hill at half-past 10 a.m..
