On <strong>the</strong>ir arrival at thatstation, <strong>the</strong>re were agreat number <strong>of</strong> desertionsamong <strong>the</strong> men, who thought <strong>the</strong>y saw anopening to make <strong>the</strong>ir fortunes in <strong>the</strong> interior ;and it was principally <strong>the</strong> young soldiers thatwent <strong>of</strong>f. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers, Captain Gordon,volunteered his services to stop <strong>the</strong> men goingaway, and only stipulated that he should have<strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> hisbro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficers, and tha<strong>the</strong> should be allowed one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cape Corpssoldiers as an interpreter to accompany him.He also asked for an order from <strong>the</strong> ColonialOffice to all field cornets, directing <strong>the</strong>m to givehim such assistance in <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> furnishing
