The <strong>of</strong>ficers' quarterswere also outside, with no protection whatever.Ano<strong>the</strong>r portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regiment was sent toPost Victoria, where a temporary detachmentunder Captain Barney was quartered.The track to Fort Peddie runs through <strong>the</strong> denseFish River bush vid Trumpeter's Drift, where<strong>the</strong>re was a small fortified barrack close to <strong>the</strong>river (held by a detachment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> underLieutenant Dickson), ascending from <strong>the</strong>re inan easterly direction through a roughand difficultcountry, until it reaches Fort Peddie, which is<strong>ca</strong>lled after Colonel Peddie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 72nd Regiment,who built it.A detachment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regimenthad beenpreviously posted here for some time undercommand <strong>of</strong> Captain Wright, who had spent hisspare time in exploring <strong>the</strong> neighbouring country,noting its physi<strong>ca</strong>l peculiarities, and finding outwhere each path led to.
