The ceremony commenced withan exhortation from <strong>the</strong> minister, Mr. Locke, who,after reminding <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir dutyto <strong>the</strong>irsovereign, <strong>the</strong>ir country, and <strong>the</strong>ir God, pointedout to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> honourable pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>British soldier, his high achievements in <strong>the</strong><strong>ca</strong>use <strong>of</strong> freedom, and <strong>the</strong> l<strong>of</strong>ty positionto whichhe had raised <strong>the</strong> British name among<strong>the</strong> nations<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth. At <strong>the</strong> termination <strong>of</strong> this address<strong>the</strong> old and new colours were unfurled, <strong>the</strong> formerliterallyin shreds, soiled, wea<strong>the</strong>r-worn, andtattered,contrasting strongly with <strong>the</strong> brilliancyand freshness <strong>of</strong> those about to be presented.The lieutenant-governor <strong>the</strong>n addressed <strong>the</strong> corps,commending highly <strong>the</strong> regiment for its goodsoldier-like conduct through its long and arduousservice in Cape Colony, and enumerated withgreat animation its gallant achievements whileforming part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British armyin <strong>the</strong> PeninsularWar. He <strong>the</strong>n referred to <strong>the</strong> country whichhad given birth to most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soldiers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 9 1stas <strong>the</strong> country celebrated for <strong>the</strong> gallant deeds
