9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 115force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reserve battalion, with two guns,1842.under command <strong>of</strong> Major Forbes, was orderedfrom Fort Beaufort to join at Colesberg, a march<strong>of</strong> about 300 miles vid <strong>the</strong> Winterberg mountains,where <strong>the</strong> whole force would be under command<strong>of</strong> Colonel Hare, C.B., who on arrival issued aproclamation ordering all loyal subjects to 1844.appearand swear allegiance, which <strong>the</strong> Dutch farmersthought wiser to do when <strong>the</strong>yhad seen <strong>the</strong> forcesent to put down any rebellion on <strong>the</strong>ir part ;<strong>the</strong>refore no hostilities took place, and <strong>the</strong> mainpart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> troops returned to <strong>the</strong>ir previousquarters, leaving three companies<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong>under Major Lament, who was succeeded byMajor Du<strong>ca</strong>t on being appointed to command <strong>the</strong>reserve battalion.
