The first and reservebattalions of the 91st furnished detachments forthis service, the object of the expedition being todrive a refractory Kaffir chief named Tola fromthe neutral territory,and to dispossess him of anumber of cattle stolen from the colony. Thethird division, commanded by Lieutenant-ColonelLindsay of the 91st Regiment, during the performanceof this duty, encountered some oppositionfrom a body of armed Kaffirs, ina skirmishwith whom one man of the battalion was severelywounded. The force returned to the colony inthe beginning of the following July, havingcaptureda considerable number of cattle.In December, 1843, the Dutch Boers in thedistrict of Colesberg, on the northern frontierabout 300 miles from G-rahamstown, began togiveserious trouble to the authorities. Accordinglya force of 400 men, consistingof 100 ofthe 27th Regiment, 200 of the 91st, and 100 ofthe Cape Mounted Rifles, were ordered fromG-rahamstown vid Somerset and Craddock toColesberg,under command of Lieutenant-ColonelJohnstone of the 27th Regiment, Major Larnontof the 91st beingsecond in command.
