The first and reservebattalions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> furnished detachments forthis service, <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> expedition being todrive a refractory Kaffir chief named Tola from<strong>the</strong> neutral territory,and to dispossess him <strong>of</strong> anumber <strong>of</strong> <strong>ca</strong>ttle stolen from <strong>the</strong> colony. Thethird division, commanded by Lieutenant-ColonelLindsay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> Regiment, during <strong>the</strong> performance<strong>of</strong> this duty, encountered some oppositionfrom a body <strong>of</strong> armed Kaffirs, ina skirmishwith whom one man <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battalion was severelywounded. The force returned to <strong>the</strong> colony in<strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following July, having<strong>ca</strong>ptureda considerable number <strong>of</strong> <strong>ca</strong>ttle.In December, 1843, <strong>the</strong> Dutch Boers in <strong>the</strong>district <strong>of</strong> Colesberg, on <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn frontierabout 300 miles from G-rahamstown, began togiveserious trouble to <strong>the</strong> authorities. Accordinglya force <strong>of</strong> 400 men, consisting<strong>of</strong> 100 <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> 27th Regiment, 200 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong>, and 100 <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Cape Mounted Rifles, were ordered fromG-rahamstown vid Somerset and Craddock toColesberg,under command <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-ColonelJohnstone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 27th Regiment, Major Larnont<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> beingsecond in command.
