9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 113CHAPTER IX.Kaffir WarPart taken <strong>the</strong>rein by 1st Battalion.IN <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> December, 1842, a force con- 1842.sisting <strong>of</strong> 800 men (<strong>of</strong> whom 400 belongedto <strong>the</strong><strong>91st</strong> Regiment) was ordered to proceed from <strong>the</strong>eastern frontier to <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn boundary, aninsurrection <strong>of</strong> emigrant farmers having beenexpected in that quarter. The force was commandedby Colonel Hare, <strong>the</strong> lieutenant-governor,and arrived at Colesberg, near <strong>the</strong> Orange River,about <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> month. No active operations,however, were found necessary, and in <strong>the</strong>beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> February following <strong>the</strong> troops1843.were ordered toreturn to <strong>the</strong>ir quarters, leaving300 men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>91st</strong> in <strong>ca</strong>ntonment at Colesberg.A general order was issued complimenting <strong>the</strong>men upon <strong>the</strong> manner in which <strong>the</strong>y had performed<strong>the</strong> fatiguing march, and on <strong>the</strong>ir generalgood conduct and discipline.In June, 1843, nearlyall <strong>the</strong> available troops8
