9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 113CHAPTER IX.Kaffir WarPart taken therein by 1st Battalion.IN the beginning of December, 1842, a force con- 1842.sisting of 800 men (of whom 400 belongedto the91st Regiment) was ordered to proceed from theeastern frontier to the northern boundary, aninsurrection of emigrant farmers having beenexpected in that quarter. The force was commandedby Colonel Hare, the lieutenant-governor,and arrived at Colesberg, near the Orange River,about the end of the month. No active operations,however, were found necessary, and in thebeginning of the February following the troops1843.were ordered toreturn to their quarters, leaving300 men of the 91st in cantonment at Colesberg.A general order was issued complimenting themen upon the manner in which they had performedthe fatiguing march, and on their generalgood conduct and discipline.In June, 1843, nearlyall the available troops8
