86 HISTORICAL RECORDS OF THE1838.During <strong>the</strong>ir stay <strong>the</strong> regimentlost a few <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>ir number, who were buried in <strong>the</strong> churchyardclose to <strong>the</strong> main guard ; among o<strong>the</strong>rs, in1838, a promising<strong>of</strong>ficer named McMurdo. ASt. Helena correspondent <strong>of</strong> that date writes,"Lieut. Charles Baird McMurdo, <strong>91st</strong> Regiment,died on <strong>the</strong> 30th <strong>of</strong> July, having just completed<strong>the</strong> 26th year <strong>of</strong> his age,when an injury in <strong>the</strong>knee, received as he was returning to his quartersat Ladder Hill on <strong>the</strong> Sunday week previous,terminated fatallyin lock-jaw two days after <strong>the</strong>symptoms had manifested <strong>the</strong>mselves. The highestimation in which this lamented <strong>of</strong>ficer washeld was evincedby<strong>the</strong> attendance at his funeral<strong>of</strong> H.E. Major-General Middlemore, C.B., andstaff, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> militaryand civil establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> island. A monumentto hismemory is about to be erected by hisbro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficers in <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> James Town."1839. On <strong>the</strong> 2nd <strong>of</strong> June, 1839, <strong>the</strong> garrison wassurprised to see H.M.S. Melville, 74 guns, sailintoanchorage at James Town and immediatelyland despatches for <strong>the</strong> governor, ordering <strong>the</strong>head-quarters (<strong>the</strong>n commanded by Major Burne)and three companies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regiment to embarkimmediatelyfor service on <strong>the</strong> eastern frontier
