The best recordfor a mile in the time when the 91st was there wastwo minutes seven seconds, performed by a Capehorse, the property of an officer of the regiment.The only duties, besides the usual regimentalroutine, were those of the main guard, stationedinsidethe sea gate, which was under command ofa subaltern who always mounted in full dress, theclimate being moderate owingto the sea-breeze.Officers of all ranks had an extra allowanceof three shillings a dayon account of thedearness of provisions. The men received saltrationsfive days a week, which had no bad effecton their health, owingto the abundance of freshvegetables obtainable.Nothing of importance occurred during thetime the head-quarters of the 91st was stationedat St. Helena ;but, as an instance of their feelingsat being quartered there, we find that the troopshipAthol, arriving in England in July, 1837, 1337.reports,"The officers and men of the 91st weregetting reconciled, as well as circumstances wouldadmit, to the discomforts and privations of theisland of St. Helena." In the same year, 1837,the regiment was on the roster for India.
