Principal’s Message...Dear Parents,I learn something each and every day that I am at John HerseyHigh School. This is such a rich and vital learning environment.But beyond that culture, lies a foundational quality of characterthat I am fortunate to be a part of in my role as principal. I amdiscovering that the students are great kids who are polite andrespectful. They set goals, and they work hard to achieve thosegoals demonstrating ethical and responsible behaviors. Theyare really quite exceptional in this regard. I commend you forthe work you have done instilling these qualities of characterwithin your children.Of course, I am also discovering the quality of instructional delivery to be extremelyhigh as well. I am finding that my staff has a common goal of providing the mostrelevant educational experience to all of your children. They are committed to seek,discover, and adopt Best Practices of instruction in their constant search for relevancyand rigor for all of Hersey’s students. They also are quite exceptional. We are fortunateindeed.Rigorous coursework is the standard that meets all students in our high school. Thispresents situations requiring time management and priority setting in order to beproductive and successful. As you know, the student’s are working hard to balance allacademic, extra-curricular, and social events they are involved in this school year. It is abusy and exciting time. You should know a bit about your son or daughter’s schedulefor the next few weeks in order to be informed and aware of the various demands upontheir attention and time.We have Homecoming occurring from October 5 through the dance on the 12 th . Variousactivities are planned for each day with Clash of the Classes, Powder Puff Soccer, Bonfireand parking lot dance, Spirit Day, and Homecoming Dance all taking place within thistime frame. We hope all of our students will enjoy their week and will find ways tobalance their involvement while staying safe and healthy.We are also making plans for our parent conferences on Monday, October 29.Conference night offers an outstanding opportunity to learn about your son ordaughter’s academic standing. Behavioral observations will also typically be discussed.This partnership, or collaboration, will allow you to engage in our common effort topersonalize the educational experience for you and your child. I know that you willfind this to be a beneficial experience.3

Dancers use movement and action to make a storycome to life.MUSICAL THEATER- (grades 4-8)Dancers learn styles of dance featured in musical numbers. There is a $25 charge for a lost elevator key.Tdap Requirement for Pertussis (whooping cough)New Freshman Immunization RequirementWhat it is-The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) now requires all studentsupon entering high school (9th grade) who have not already received Tdap,receive one Tdap dose regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT, orTd dose. The cases of Pertussis (whooping cough) in Illinois have increasedin 2011, which has caused these new mandates by the Illinois Department ofPublic Health. Controversial Issues in the ClassroomTownship High School District 214’s primary mission is to enable all students to learn theskills, acquire the knowledge, and develop the behaviors necessary for them to reach theirfull potential as citizens who can meet the challenges of a changing society. In a democracythat openly confronts acute and pressing political, social, economic, and moral problems, itis likely that such issues will be evident in classrooms. Discussions about these issues providestudents with the type of learning experience that will help prepare them to meet thechallenges of a global changing society.District 214 provides its parents/guardians an opportunity to grant permission for their son ordaughter to participate in a class or to request an alternative assignment when study materialsare deemed controversial. Parents/guardians with concerns regarding controversial issues,materials, and curricula should contact the school’s principal.Budget for 2011-12Section 17-1.2 of the Illinois School Code (105 ILCS 5/17-1.2) requires school districts topost the current budget, itemized by receipts and expenditures, on their website and to notifyparents/guardians that the budget has been posted and the address of the website.
