Trabzon’da manastırlarPek çok tarihi yapısı olan Trabzon manastırları arasında kuşkusuz enönemlisi Sümela Manastırı. İl sınırları içinde yer alan Vezalon (Yahya),Kuştul-Hızır İlyas (Gregorius Peristera), Kaymaklı, Kızlar (PanagiaTheoskepastos), Kızlar (Panagıa Keramesta) manastır yapıları büyükölçüde tahrip olmuş durumda.Karadağ’ın eteklerine oyulu ve vadiden 300 metre yükseklikte yeralan Sümela Manastırı bugün yalnızca Trabzon’un değil, ülkenin enönemli tarihi yapılarından biri. Türkiye’de inanç turizminin en büyükayaklarından birini oluşturan manastır, Nisan-Ekim ayları arasındaziyaretçi akınına uğruyor. Öte yandan Sümela son iki senedir, FenerRum Patriği Bartholomeos tarafından yönetilen ve Rusya, Yunanistan,Gürcistan ile ABD’den gelen yüzlerce Ortodoks’un katıldığı genişçaplı ayinlere de sahne oluyor.An excursion to Sümela is certainly an unforgettable cultural journey dueto the architecture, the atmosphere reflecting past centuries and definitelydue to its fabulous frescoes.The Black Virgin Mary fresco no longer exists.The frescoes inside the monastery are dated from the 9 th to the 18 th centuriesand are believed to have been created in three successive layers.There are various rumours concerning the Black Virgin Mary fresco: that itnever existed, or that it was deteriorated through wear and tear of time orthat it was taken away by priests coming from Greece at the beginning ofthe 20 th century...In the oldest part of the monastery, the Rock Church and the Chapel,inner and outer walls are decorated with frescoes depicting Jesus Christand Virgin Mary and scenes from the Bible.Monasteries in TrabzonSümela Monastery is undoubtedly the most significant historical treasureamongst the various monasteries located in Trabzon. The other monasteries’buildings in the region such as Vezalon (Yahya), Gregorius Peristera(Kuştul-Hızır İlyas), Panagia Theoskepastos (Kızlar), Panagia Keramesta(Kızlar) are partly destroyed or in poor condition. Sümela erectedon Black Mountain at an altitude of 300m.up from the valley, is not onlyTrabzon’s most important heritage but one of Turkey’s foremost historicalsites. An important leg of the country’s faith tourism, the monasteryis receiving many visitors from April to October.
