Active Measures(Continued from page 11)Possible “Requests” from the Bank1. Looking for other defaulting/―skipping‖ shipsand at least reporting their whereabouts and doings, but this is distasteful work for a free trader. But thebank has investments other than in free traders. Thebank loans to planets, schools, nobles, it even loans tosubsectors. These investments require travel andcargo room, and sometimes they require adventure.2. Transporting sizeable amounts of ―hard‖money, along with security and bank agents doublestacked in every stateroom, and with an armed escortship keeping very closely stationed near the party‘sship at all times.3. Baiting a corsair that has been preying on theother traders financed by the bank, hoping that the―escort‖ that will spring the trap shows up before theparty‘s ship—and crew—becomes a casualty.4. Transporting a group of people, at the bank‘srequest, to a backwater world. There‘s somethingabout the group, though, that leaves the PCs wary ofthem...5. Bringing a branch office module to an asteroidsystem, arriving after a collision smashes two big asteroidsinto a gravelstorm.Editor’s Note: When originally posted to Citizens of the Imperium, this adventure seed generated a fair number of ideas from the community. Those ideas are presented here, otherwise unattributed.6. Delivering repossessed or recovered (from beingstolen) cargo to its proper owner, possibly in theface of opposition from the thief or defaulter.7. Government-subsidized (agricultural or technicalaid) shipments to colonies. This can be normalcolony-building, or recovery from sabotage or a disaster. If the colony was sabotaged, will this shipment betargeted?8. The bank decides to use this ship as transportfor executive junkets.9. The ―bank representative‖ is not who he seems. An underworld group has bought the loan from thebank, and now intends to use the ship—and crew—tolaunder ill gotten gains...10. The ―bank representative‖ is not who heseems. A Megacorporation agent invoved in shadydealings with the underworld has used corporatefunds to purchase the loan, and now intends to useyour ship for some shady dealing with the underworld.Naturally, his tracks are well-covered, and ifthe dealings come to light, it won‘t be the agent whogets burned...11. A Government agency plants recording devicesin the ship for use in a ―sting‖ operation. It‘s notclear who the target of the ―sting‖ is...12. The ship gets used as a breakable toy, to trainup young executives. The PCs are saddled with a successionof ambitious, inexperienced, but not necessarilystupid owners-aboard. Each of them uses the opportunityto show what they can do. Being inexperienced, they will make mistakes for the PCs to cleanup…somehow.13. The bank—or rather, a group within the bank(might as well call them a ―cabal‖)— have long-termplans to set up their own fledgling line to take over anumber of free-trader routes. They have been active inundercutting the free-traders locally, which is why thePCs‘ own ship got into difficulty in the first place. Now the PCs will be used to do this to other freetraders.14. The banker is actually trying very hard toavoid repossessing the ship, since that would reveal tohis bosses that he has made a multi-million-creditloan to someone with no collateral and a business plancentered on incidental, ad-hoc charters and cargospeculation.15. Whether they like it or not, the ship and creware used to not only spot skipping ships, but to act as acovert platform and agents to facilitate the repo. Thebank hopes to make this more palatable to the PCs byoffering them credit toward their own mortgage forany ship that sells for more than its remaining loanbalance.16. As 15, but one ship‘s original owner bears a―blood grudge‖ over the loss of his somewhat tarnisheddream to ―turncoat‖ free traders, and will useevery opportunity to track them down and give themtheir ―just desserts‖. Being without assets, this endsup as a many month hopscotch of working passagesfor the no-longer-owner to catch up with the charactersand their ―bargain.‖. The bank will do nothing aslong as the ship isn‘t damaged.12
