REFERRALS FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED SERVICESReferrals for Gifted and Talented services are accepted at all times throughout theacademic year. Anyone may refer a student for review by the GT committee for services(teachers, parents, other adults, students, self-referrals).For 2012-13 start of school placement:Deadline for referrals is May 4, 2012; 4 p.m.The GT committee will review files before the beginning of the second semester. If placed in thegifted program, student schedule changes will be made at the beginning of second semester.For second semester placement (2012-13): Deadline for referrals is October 5, 2012; 4 p.m.Kindergarten: Referrals for March 2013 placement are accepted beginningJanuary 2013. The deadline for Kindergarten referrals is January 11, 2013; 4 p.m..For 2013-14 start of school placement:Deadline for referrals is May 3, 2013; 4 p.m.Referrals received after the deadline will be processed over the first semester.Review Process:1. Classroom observations are requested from teachers in the core subject area(s) of referral.Students are assessed for:2. scholastic aptitude,3. reasoning, and4. academic achievementGT Committee Review: Students are expected to meet district criteria (96%) on three of these fourmeasures for placement in each core area for which they are referred. Additional information will beconsidered for placement.**Parents making referrals for GT services are asked to write a letter that includes information on theirson or daughters area(s) of strength/talents, his/her interests outside of school, observations of their childin relation to their child’s age peers that indicate GT services may be appropriate, and any concerns thatthey have: academically, socially, and pertaining to the emotional well-being of their son/daughter.Note: Transfer students, who have previously received gifted and talented services will beassessed and considered for services in <strong>Lovejoy</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> within one month from the date ofregistration (or the first day of school if a summer registration).GT records will be requested. Further assessment may not be necessary if the prior district canprovide results from nationally referenced assessments administered within 24 months.Appeal of GT Committee Decision: An appeal of a GT committee decision must be received inwriting by the GT Coordinator within 15 school days of the date of notification.Appeals will be handled in a manner consistent with L<strong>ISD</strong> policy- FNG (Local).
