2A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Wednesday, December 7, 2011By ERIKA PEDROZAThe rain and cold weathermay have put a damperon the number of riderswho made the trek fromDecatur to Bridgeport inthe 12th installment of theWise County Toy Run Sunday. But it did not affect theirgenerosity and outreach.“We will be able to helpout as many people as wenormally do,” said WiseCounty Toy Run participantBarry Bynum. “Probablyof the 12 years that we’vedone this, this was the lowestturnout we’ve had. Weusually run 800; this timewe had about 80.“But we had people comeout in their cars to join usat the Harwood Park pavilionin Bridgeport after therun. And we have enoughmoney built up to do whatwe’ve always done to helppeople,” he said. The Toy Run, which beginsat the Decatur MiddleSchool field house andends at Harwood Park inBridgeport, is open to allmotorcyclists for $10 or anunwrapped toy.At the conclusion of therun, a chili lunch is served, and there is an auction, T-shirt sales and a raffle. These activities pairedwith sponsorships by areabusinesses comprised abulk of the funds for thisyear’s contributions.“It’s a community-wideeffort; you can’t nameone person,” Bynum said.“Thanks to the fine merchantsof Wise County whomake contributions, a lot ofthem every year. All I haveto say is ‘It’s Toy Run time,’and they’ll donate — itemsfor the auction, meat andcrackers for the chili, drinks— without question.”The funds raised not onlyprovide families in needwith shopping cards to thegrocery store and Christmasgifts for the children, but also a scholarship fora senior at every school inthe county.“People have a bad impressionof bikers,” Bynumsaid. “But let me tell you, these bikers have the biggestheart. If you’ve everstood beside the highwayto see the 800-somethingcycles ride from Decatur toBridgeport, you’ll see that.Until you come and witnesswhat it is, it’s hard to appreciateall that this eventmeans to all who participate.Ride for the kids —that’s what it’s all about.”Email Erika at epedroza@wcmessenger.com.WISE COUNTYDespite less riders, Toy Run deemed a successontinued from page 1Ae turned around and went home.”American leaders had been relucantto intervene after Germany’snvasion of Poland in 1939 beganorld War II, but the expansionsmof Germany and its allies couldot be ignored after Japan’s surrisebombing left 2,388 Americansead, another 1,178 wounded and 21American ships sunk or damaged atPearl Harbor.“I’d never heard of Pearl Harbor, but we found out about it at the theaterbefore we went in,” said Fickle, who lives in Runaway Bay.“We had a lot of faith in Roosevelt, and right away, he was on (the radio)with his famous speech, calling it adate which will live in infamy. I heardhim make that (Dec. 8, 1941) speechlive on our radio at the Home.”Congress voted to declare war onJapan Dec. 8, 1941, and four dayslater, declared war against Japaneseallies Germany and Italy.Growing up in Park Springs, Decaturresident Carl Mowery didn’thave access to a radio.“We didn’t have a car, we didn’thave running water, we didn’t haveelectricity, we didn’t take a newspaper,”he said. “It was tough. We werestill in the Depression. The way wefound out about things was to hearthings from somebody else.“But the patriotic spirit was sostrong back then. It wasn’t like youwere sitting back badmouthing Republicansor Democrats. Patriotismwas paramount. I’d loved to havegone to the Philippines to drive anambulance at 15.”Mowery first saw Fort Worth whenhe was 16 and tried to enlist in theNavy by lying about his age and tellinghim he was really 17.“They caught me,” he said, notingit was a year later when he succeededin joining the Navy. He served ina bomb and mine disposal unit onOkinawa and also aboard a minesweeper. When the war was over, he receivedtwo letters of thanks, one from Secretaryof the Navy James Forrestal, the other from President Harry Truman.Alvord resident Tal Morrison, 90,was attending the U.S. Naval PreparatorySchool in Long Beach whenPearl Harbor was attacked. The sonof a Hollywood cinematographer wasnot surprised by the news.“When Hitler invaded the Sudetenlandin Czechoslovakia in Septemberof 1939, everybody knew that, sooneror later, we were going to get intoWorld War II,” he said.A pilot in the Pacific during WorldWar II, Morrison said he had wantedto join the Navy since the USS Constitution,“Old Ironsides,” visited theWest Coast, and Morrison went tosee her as part of a school field tripwhen “I was about in the fourth orfifth grade.”Morrison’s plans, that includedenrolling at the U.S. Naval Academyin Annapolis, Md., were altered byPearl Harbor.Huebner admitted that the PearlHarbor attack caught him by surprise.“We were still trying to find outwhere Pearl Harbor was,” he recalledabout the hours after hearing thenews. “All we knew about the Japanesewas they were the ones whomade the cheap toys.”The Chicago native found himselfat Pearl Harbor less than a year laterin connection with his duties as adriver for high-ranking officers.“I got there in August 1942, andnothing had changed (from the immediateaftermath of the bombing),”Huebner said.“The ships were still like you seeMessenger photo by Joe DutyTOY RUN— Angel Martinez and Shelby Addison sort through the toys collectedfrom the 12th Wise County Toy Run Sunday. Alot of people were over there, cuttingmetal. We had to go in and out untilwe could find a place to dock theship.”Huebner’s wartime in the Pacificwas divided between working incommunications, where he ferriedmessages back and forth to commanders, and as a driver, and hespent time both in Hawaii and onother Pacific bases.“I hauled pilots from the Ewa Fieldbase to Honolulu,” he said. “Someof them received decorations andthank-yous. I’d take them by stationwagon to dinner in Pearl City and towhere the clipper ships (seaplanes)came in. They went home by clipper.“The harbor itself was really damaged, but as you moved out towardthe city, the damage was cleanedup. Waikiki (Beach) was all underbarbed wire,” he said. From August 1942 until January1943, when Fickle passed throughPearl Harbor as a hospital corpsmanon his way to Eniwetok Atoll inthe Marshall Islands, little changedin the harbor.“You couldn’t go through the harborfor all the (damaged) ships thatwere blocking the harbor,” Ficklesaid. “I was over there a year afterthe attack, and it still looked like abattleground. They kept us aboardship.”The Runaway Bay resident set upfield hospitals at Eniwetok, Saipan,Guam and Tinian. After Japan’ssurrender, he worked in a navalhospital on Guam before being dischargedfrom the Navy in January1946.“We weren’t all in the soup all ofthe time. Our job really was to getthat thing (hospital) set up and thenthey sent us out of there,” Ficklesaid. He worked on hospital ships ferryingwounded from field hospitals tobase hospitals and made four tripsto Okinawa “to haul patients backto the Marianas.”He also made several trips backand forth to Hawaii picking up suppliesand spent time at HickamField, the Oahu air base that wasalso a key target on Dec. 7, 1941.In 1945, Fickle was on Tinianalong with a soon-to-be-famousbomber, the Enola Gay.It dropped the first of two atomicbombs unleashed on Japan on HiroshimaAug. 6. A second bombercalled Blocks Car dropped an atomicbomb on Nagasaki, Japan, Aug. 9.The Japanese surrendered Aug.14, 1945.“The Enola Gay flew off from Tinianto drop bombs,” he said. “Weweren’t far from the airstrip, andairmen were over with us all thetime wanting us to fly with them toJapan (on regular bombing raids). They wanted to have a corpsmanwith them on their plane.“When they brought the (atomic)bomb on, we knew about it. Well, wedidn’t know all the hubbub that wasgoing on. We didn’t have communicationthen like we do now. You justheard things however you could getit,” Fickle explained. However Americans heard thenews about the bombing of PearlHarbor, it was the call to arms thatdefined the so-called “Greatest Generation”and did so much to shapethis country. An attack on U.S. soilwas not repeated during World WarII.“The rest of the war didn’t have alot to do with Pearl Harbor,” Ficklesaid, “but Pearl Harbor had a lot todo with the rest of the war.”Email Dave at drogers@wcmessenger.com.Wise County isOPEN FORBUSINESSLocal SalesTax SupportsYOURCity & CountyServiceswww.LookLocalWiseCounty.orgPhil MajorPresident & PublisherP.O. 8 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Wednesday, December 7, 2011OutdoorsScale insect can be a problemy TODD VINEYARDISE CO. EXTENSIONGENTOne of the most commonnsects I find when maknghorticulture visits is thecale insect. One of the comonscale insects that wend is the euonymous scalehat attacks many species ofndoor and outdoor plants. Many species of scale inectsdamage landscapelants, shrubs and trees.cale insects insert theirouthparts into plant tisuesand suck out the sap.hen scale numbers areigh, plant growth will betunted, leaves will developellow blotches, branchesill die and some or all of theeaves may fall off.Although scale insects areommon, they are probablyhe most misidentified of allinsect groups. Scale insectsare generally small (1/4-inchlong or less) and often mimicvarious plant partssuch as bark or buds.Other species appearas small, white, waxyblotches or small bitsof cotton on leaves orstems. The one attributeof scale insectsthat leads to the misidentificationis thatthey appear to be nonliving.Once the youngcrawlers settle on a plant, they generally don’t moveand can be overlooked.Depending on the species, scale insects can spendthe winter as eggs, youth oradults.Because of their protectivewax covering, most scaleinsects are very difficult tocontrol with insecticidesonce they have settled. ScaleAgNewsinsects are most vulnerableto spray formulations of contactinsecticides during thecrawlers stage. Many pesticides areavailable to consumerswanting to controlscale. Pesticides workbest on crawlers. Foreffective control, youmay need to applypesticides two to fourtimes at five to sevendayintervals becausemost pesticides workfor less than a week, butcrawlers from a single generationcan hatch over severalweeks.Regardless of the numberof applications needed, youmust cover the plant thoroughlywith insecticide eachtime. Cover both sides of theleaves and all the twigs andbranches.Dormant oils should be appliedbefore spring growthbegins, when temperaturesare above 45 degrees for 24to 48 hours. Apply summersprays when temps are below90 degrees for 24 to 48hours.When scales are on plantsthat are actively growing, apply a systemic insecticidesuch as imidacloprid aroundthe base of scale-infestedplants.The following is a partiallist of approved insecticidesavailable for scale insect control:orthene, Azatin XL, Sevin,Di-Syston, Merit, Battle, horticultural oil, Olympic insecticidalsoap and Distance.Read and follow instructionson the label. How and whenshould I do that?Fall and early winterare great times to plantnew trees. You’ll find goodsupplies in nurseries, andthey’ll have half a year toget established before nextsummer. The pear will probablytry to resprout fromits roots. If at all possible, have someone grind or pullthe stump out for you. Don’tfeel like your new tree hasto go in exactly the samelocation.Dear Neil: I lost much ofmy St. Augustine this pastsummer. I had no chinchbugs, at least not that I saw.The grass that is under myoak trees is doing well, butin the sunny areas, I see a lotof dead runners. I’m thinkingabout ripping it out andresodding. My lawn was 30years old. Are the new St.Augustine varieties betterthan what would have beenplanted then? When shouldI resod? That really does soundlike chinch bug damage. They always showup in the hottest, sunniest parts ofyour yard. Theyare very small, andthey’re on the surfaceof the ground,so they can be runningrampant, andyou really won’t seethem. However, toyour point, you want towait until spring to resod(late March through mid-May would be ideal). Allvarieties of St. Augustineare about equal in damagedone by chinch bugs, if theywere involved. Otherwise, differences between typesaren’t very great. If youhave ample healthy grassleft in parts of your lawn, you might consider diggingplugs from those areas andrepopulating the bare spotswith them. You won’t gainmuch by changing varietiescompared to what wouldhave been planted in the1980s.Gardener’sMailbagDear Neil: My mulberrytree was covered this summerby black bugs withred stomachs. Therewere thousands ofthem. They could fly,but they moved veryslowly on the trunk, and they were alwayspaired off, perhapsmating. Nothinggot rid of them, and now the trunkdoes appear to havesome damage. What werethey, and how can I eliminatethem? They sound like box elderbugs. Do a web search for aphoto of that insect, and ifthat’s what you had, they’remore of an annoyance thana threat to your tree. You’llnotice in the photo thatthey have shield-shapedbacks (as are other true“bugs” in the Order Hemiptera). As a group, theseare difficult pests to eradicate.Luckily, they don’t domuch damage. My personalexperience with them ontree species other than boxelders has been that theymay be bad one year, thennot return to that sametree for many years, if ever.I’d sit tight and watch comespring.Dear Neil: I appreciatedyour reply to my photiniaquestion. I cut successiveamounts off a largebranch. As you predicted,I did not find any greentissue. If samples of a fewmore bushes give negativeresults, I’m going to removeand replace them in thenear future. Thanks. You’re welcome. I’m gladthat you’re willing to makethe change. I see so manypeople who struggle along, trying to save decliningredtips. At this point, it helps toknow that “false labor” contractions come at irregular intervals and varyin length and intensity. True labor contractions may be irregular initially, but eventually they come at regular and shorter intervals, become moreintense, and last longer. The contractions associated with false laboralso tend to be centered in the lower abdomen while the pain oftrue-labor contractions is more likely to emanate in the lower back andwrap around the abdomen. True labor contractions are also persistentwhile Braxton Hicks contractions may subside with changes in position.Whether you’re pregnant for the first time or are expecting the latestaddition to your family, this time in your life requires excellent carefor you and your developing baby. There’s notelling what effect a medicalproduct might have onthe seeds. Letting themdry thoroughly, then storingthem in a sealed bagor bottle in the refrigeratorshould be all you needto do.Dear Neil: I stuck somepoplar branches in theground after pruning mytree last winter. To my surprise, they sprouted rootsand have grown vigorously. When can I dig them andreplant them? Some of theirbranches are bigger thanthe main stem. Do I cutthese off, or just transplantthe entire thing? If I’m understandingyour question, the rooted“cuttings” have started tobranch. If so, you’ll probablywant to remove someof the lower branches asyou transplant them whilethey’re dormant this winter(January is ideal). If thenew trees are more than 2or 3 feet tall, they may suffera little setback from theroots that will be lost.Dear Neil: We have convertedour vegetable gardenfrom the spring into a wintergarden with a hoop-stylegreenhouse. We’ve had antsin the garden all season, and baits haven’t helped. What could we use now? That’s a difficult questionto answer, and I really don’tthink I should attemptit here without knowingprecisely what type of antis involved.
