Goodbye, Summer. Hello, School Year!
GISD students left the lazy days of summer
to welcome early mornings, old and new
friends, homework, and ball games on their
first day of school on August 27. The new
year brought big changes for those moving to
a different campus: Freshmen, 5th Graders
and Pre-K students.

New Year, New Policies Bring Excitement for GHS Students
By GHS Principal Kelly Teems
The 2012-2013 year has officially begun and
aside from new schedules and new locker
assignments, students were greeted with some
new policies for the brand new year. One of them
was not really a new policy, but rather a revision
to one. As many are already aware, the GISD
Board recently approved some sweeping changes
to the GISD Dress Code. This seems to have been
the highlight of the new year for GHS students.
As I introduced Dr. Siler to the students during
our first day convocation, she was welcomed with
a resounding round of applause from the students.
There were a few contributing factors that led to
considerations for a change, but primarily it was a
result of re-evaluating the amount of time teachers
and administrators in the district were spending
interpreting and enforcing the previous
version of the dress code. The goal is to hopefully
reduce the amount of time that administrators
and teachers spend in that area and to focus more
of our time and effort on instructional practices.
While we certainly acknowledge the merits of the
old dress code and appreciate the way our
students were presented both on campus and on
school trips, we feel that the changes are going to
be a win-win for our students and staff alike.
The Dress Code Committee, consisting of district
teachers, administrators and parents, felt like it
was time for a change. The committee was

confident that revisions would bring much more
flexibility and variety to the dress code which, in
turn, would make it much more” family friendly.”
The committee adopted a “Neck to Knee”
philosophy. Specific guidelines remain in place to
preserve the elements of the dress code that are
essential for maintaining a modest and
conservative look for our students at school.
While the students are certainly fired up about
the change, Dr. Siler and I were careful to point
out to them that we will closely monitor the
situation and evaluate their adherence to the new
policies. There are consequences built into the
new policy that are meant to help teachers and
administrators deal with individuals who do not
comply with the new code. We believe that the
vast majority of students will not deviate from
the guidelines and that only the few who choose
to on a consistent basis will be relegated to follow
a version of the previous dress code for a set
number of weeks.
After seeing the students on the first day,
I believe it is going to work
out just as planned. I still
think our students look great
and they definitely seem
happy and energized for the
new year.

The Varsity and JV Cheerleaders traveled to Tarleton State University in
July for NCA Cheer Camp. The Varsity squad received top honors and
came home with the "Champion Chant" trophy. Ashlie Holcomb received

� The 2012-2013 Gunter ISD Budget was presented by Dr. Jill Siler and Renee Maples. The total expenditures for
the 2012-2013 fiscal year are a 4% decrease from 2011-2012.
� The 2012-2013 Grayson County COOP budget was presented by Christy Nolen and Renee Maples. The COOP is
made up of 12 schools in Grayson County and Gunter ISD is the fiscal agent.
� The 2012-2013 Tax Rate was presented. The Gunter ISD board of trustees adopted a proposed rate of $1.58

Elementary Parent Night
Tuesday, September 4
Gunter Elementary is excited about the upcoming 2012-2013
school year with many new faces and challenges to meet.
Parent Night is extremely important to learn the specific
procedures and expectations for each particular grade and teacher.
We go over homework, daily folders, discipline procedures,
curriculum requirements, campus procedures and district policies
that play an important role in providing an effective education for
our children.
This is for parents, and we encourage you to make arrangements
to leave the children at home. In order to do all of the grades in one
night, there will be a few families which will encounter some
overlapping meetings. If this occurs, one parent can attend one
meeting while the other one goes to the other meeting. If that is not
convenient, please set up a different time you could meet with your
child’s teacher.
It is important that you attend each meeting because each grade
and teacher is different in some areas. Even if you have had
children in a particular teacher’s room in the past, attendance is
important because changes have been made that you will need to
know.

It's an exciting time of year as the Gunter Tigers get ready to start the 2012 football season.
Coaches and players have worked hard and pushed through summer workouts to put our team in a
position to win this year.
As always, we have a very tough non-district schedule. We feel that playing this schedule will prepare
us to compete for a district championship and to compete to win in the playoffs. The 2012 Tigers
are young at many spots, but I feel we have a hungry football team. We know that we must
continue to improve each week to earn the right to represent 7-AA in the playoffs.
The first week we are playing the Boyd Yellow Jackets. Boyd is coached by first year head coach,
Brandon Hopkins. Coach Hopkins replaces legendary coach J.G. Cartwright. Boyd is led by their
dual threat quarterback, Senior Black McDonald. They have a lot of experience coming back from a
team that won 10 games last year.
Gunter and Boyd have had some great games in the past 6 years. We know that this one will be
no different. We expect a hard hitting physical contest and the Gunter Tigers will be ready to play!
