District News
A rising tide lifts all boats.
What a great thing we have going here in Gunter. Sometimes,
I think we are the best-kept secret around! We have
such high expectations and standards in the classroom, in
boys and girls sports of all kinds, in band and choir, ag, robotics,
and other activities. In fact, here in Gunter, it’s high tide!
All our students have tremendous opportunities to excel in
just about every way possible!
One of the ways we have seen our students excel in the
past and are working to see them excel in the future is in the
area of respect for others. You are probably aware of the
bullying issues in the national news in the past few months.
In fact, since April, 1999 and the horrific events at Columbine
High School in Colorado, these issues have been seen differently
by educators across the country. Many people have
begun to realize that it can happen anywhere.
In the last year, everything has changed again. In the new
online world of Facebook and Twitter, “cyber-bullying” is an
area of concern. We would be foolish to say “it can’t happen
here.”
When I first came to Gunter, one of the things I noticed was
how polite many students were. You may know that we have
implemented several programs to continue to emphasize this
important area of helping kids grow into responsible, productive,
and caring adults.
At the middle school, we use Project Wisdom, a series of
announcements featuring quotes by notable figures and
“something to think about.” These announcements are about
showing respect, thinking of others, kindness, smiling, doing
the right thing, etc. Everyone at GMS hears an announcement
just after the pledges and moment of
silence each morning.
This year, we’ve started another new program –
“R-Time” in grades K-6 and “Negotiate” in grades 7 and 8. R-
Time and Negotiate focus on randomly pairing students together
and giving them the opportunity to practice good manners,
cooperation, and civility. Teachers are to model expected
behaviors and students mirror these behaviors as they
Page 3
Handling Peer Pressure
The Sixth Graders at GMS have been discussing strategies for
handling peer pressure. Six of their suggestions are provided.
You can handle peer pressure by hanging out with good friends.
Another thing to think about is what will happen after you drink
that beer, take those drugs, or steal that car that everybody told you
to. One example is you are invited to a party that you know is going
to make trouble and you are on the football team – one game away
from a state championship victory. The team rule is you have to
have a 70 or up in every grade and your big math test is tomorrow
that you need to study for. Should you stay home and study, or go
to the party? Stay home! By Bo Whitteker
High Tide
By Pat Autry, GMS Principal
engage in conversations about topics
that include bullying, popularity, peer
pressure, and “doing what’s right”.
The hope is that as students practice
respect and courtesy, Gunter Middle
School students will produce a learning
environment that is free of the
“typical” middle school problems.
Student goals for the program include:
Ability to plan and work cooperatively
and successfully with
others.
Pat Autry
GMS Principal
Compete fairly, win or lose with dignity and show of respect
for others.
Recognize and stand up for their rights and for the rights of
others.
Understand and value both the differences and the things
in common between people.
Respect the rights of others to have beliefs and values different
from their own.
Develop the social, emotional and behavioral skills that
influence practically all aspects of personal, school, home,
and community life.
You will also soon be hearing about a program for grades 7
– 12 called Rachel’s Challenge. This will include a program
for students during school and an identical program for parents
that same evening. You won’t want to miss it.
It is my desire that, just as in the other areas I
mentioned, we will have high standards in the area of
respect – that we will teach our kids the importance of
respecting themselves and others – so that our students will
be able to be the best they can be and use their
education as a springboard to a lifetime of opportunity.
A rising tide lifts all boats.
We’re having a great year at GMS. Please don't
hesitate to contact me if I can help you in any way.
When and if you are faced with peer pressure, always trust your
instincts. Girls, don’t let those bratty chicks in your school push
you around. Guys, don’t let the jocks around you pressure you into
something you know is not right. Make sure and tell them how
much of a stronger person you are than them for rejecting their
ignorant abuse. They are all just weak meatheads that need mental
help. But you? No, you’re amazing inside and out, so show it! I
would sure notice you! By Chaney Elvington
Peer pressure means that people try to convince you to do what
they are doing. I might be good; it might be bad. Either way, say no
or follow your heart. Peer pressure will affect your life if you say
yes to bad things. I mean, hello?! Are you going to jump off a cliff
just because someone told you to? Of course not! Use common
sense. By Carlos Rodriguez
ROBOTICS
Gunter Robotics took 3rd Place overall at the NT BEST Regional
Robotics competition held in Gunter last weekend. The
3rd place finish was not enough to send the team to the state
level competition, so members will spend the next couple of
weeks evaluating this year's season and start brainstorming
ideas for next year.
Along with the 3rd place finish, Gunter
was awarded the Most Elegant Award
which is given to the team who's robot
operates with the most fluid movements.
With the close of the season, the Gunter
Robotics Team would like to thank everyone
for their support this year.
Six weeks is a very short time to accomplish all of the tasks
required by the BEST competition. We would not have been
successful without the support of our community sponsors, the
Robotics Booster Club, and GISD administration. Thanks to all!
Antarctica
The Discovery class of GES is studying continents
throughout the year. We will spotlight a
continent each six weeks. This six weeks we
studied Antarctica. The students learned about
the "Coldest place on Earth." This six weeks
they will study South America.
If anyone who has lived there or traveled
there and would like to speak with the students,
we would love to hear from you. You can
contact Tina Smith at tsmith@gunterisd.org or
903-433-5315.
The NED Show came to GES on October 26
as part of Red Ribbon Week. Ned put on a
great show, and the kids loved his performance.
The NED Show promotes academic
achievement and character development by
teaching skills that will benefit kids for a lifetime.
The students learned while watching cool
yo-yo tricks. Ned also talked to the kids about
staying drug free, and staying drug free helps
you show your own “NED” skills.
Core Essential for November
For the month of November our Core Essential character trait is
UNIQUENESS. Students will participate in lessons to encourage initiative.
UNIQUENESS: Learning more about others so
you can know more about yourself
Uniqueness includes learning what is special about others so that in
turn, you learn more about what is special about you! Some examples of
what might make you unique are the number of siblings you have, the
sports you play, your favorite foods and color, what you want to be when
you grow up and so much more!
When we share with each other what makes us special we start to get
a sense that there is NO ONE just like us! This month, maybe at dinner
or in the car, share with your family what is special about you and let
others add what they love about you.
GES students wore red as part of their pledge to be drug free. The
students and teachers signed a giant banner that will be on display in
the cafeteria.
BACK TO BACK UNDEFEATED DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!
By Head Coach Keva Reed
The Lady Tigers did it again beating every district opponent amassing a 14-0 district record! This season has truly
been a total team effort. Throughout district, the team averaged 10 aces and 5 blocks per match. The team has focused
on their defense this year, and it has showed in our stats where we've had at least 5 digs to every kill from an opponent.
On the offensive side, the Lady Tigers have been virtually unstoppable averaging close to 35 kills per match! The girls
sure make games exciting with their powerfull swings! Up next is the Area Round in playoffs. The Lady Tigers will face
Peaster on Thursday, November 4, at Denton Guyer High School at 7 pm. We hope to see everyone out there cheering!
Lady Tigers win a tough battle against Denison
The Lady Tigers stepped up to playoff level and gave it everything they had in a 5 set thriller in a warm up match
against 4A playoff team Denison last Friday. The girls started the first set a little slow, then battled back at the end. The
were incomplete control of the second set, with the last three sets being a great fight between the two teams. It was an
entire group effort as the
girls fought for every
point, doing everything
they could to not let the
ball fall on our side of the
court. The team really
showed that they are
ready for the next level of
play this year and are
determined to make a
deep run in the playoffs
this year. The scores
were 21-25, 25-11, 19-
25, 25-18, 15-13.
This week the Gunter Tigers will travel to Whitewright to play for the 5-AA Div. II District
Championship. We are excited about the opportunity to play such a strong opponent
and are eagerly looking forward to the challenge.
The Whitewright Tigers are led by Head Coach Jodie Stringer. Coach Stringer has led
his team to a 9-0 record to this point. On offense Whitewright is led by their Sophomore
quarterback Tyrone Swoopes. Swoopes is a dual threat quarterback and is the key to
Whitewright's high powered spread offense. Other standout offensive players are WR
Hamilton Luper and RB Blaine Wortham.
Defensively, Whitewright uses a 4-2-5 scheme. They are anchored up front by defensive
linemen Taylor Robinson and Mark Gudgel.
We are very excited to be 4-0 in district, and I am very proud of the efforts by our
coaches and players. I know that our team will be playing hard and our coaches will be
coaching hard on Friday night! Please make the drive over to Whitewright and support
your Tigers! Come early, Be loud, and Wear blue!
