The Gunter ISD Foundation Trust
(GIFT) presents “Afraid of the Dark”
7 pm, Saturday, April 30, and 3 pm,
Sunday, May 1, at the GHS Commons
A mystery farce by James Reach,
“Afraid of the Dark” centers around
young newlyweds Chauncey and
Lillums Stone who arrive at a
supposedly unoccupied country estate only
to find it inhabited by fantastic
characters. Starring in the
comedy are real-life husband
and wife Justin and
Elizabeth Wallis, who
play the Stones.
“Married in late 2009,
Justin and Elizabeth are
practically newlyweds
themselves,” said Bob Watson, theater director
at Sherman High School and director
of the annual GIFT fundraiser.
“What makes the production even
more interesting is the pair are
expecting their first child this summer, so
Elizabeth will be playing the part seven
months pregnant. But the two were just
perfect in auditions.”
Joining the Wallises on stage are Jacob
Waggoner, Mattie Gonzalez, Lee Franze,
Stephanie Kelly, Karla Hughlett, Mark
Millar, Haunani Shipper, Robert Franze,
Gwynn Smith, Leilani Holloway and Andy
Bardach. Many of the actors have appeared
in past GIFT productions.
Tickets for the play are
$12 each and include a
dessert reception. Saturday’s
audience members
also will enjoy a silent
auction.
Tickets are available
now and can be purchased at the Gunter
ISD administration building or by phoning
Connie Williams at 903-433-4750.

Public Education: What is it worth to you?
You can’t turn on the news or read the paper without seeing something about the current state
revenue shortfall facing the state during the current biennium, the two year budget cycle. The
State of Texas has informed school districts to prepare for a potential cut to their state revenue in
an effort to balance the state budget. With the recent numbers released this week, the state is
currently looking at a $9.8 billion cut to public schools over the next two years. That means
lawmakers currently are discussing a $4.9 billion dollar reduction to public education for the
upcoming school year.
It could get better, but how much better? House Bill 275 has been proposed to allow the use of
$3.1 billion of the $9 billion rainy day fund, allowing $2 billion of the funds to be used toward
education. That brings the overall reduction of state funding to $7.8 billion for the two year period.
The current bill representing the budget cuts is House Bill 1 and it plans to hit the House floor on
Friday, April 1 st . The House Appropriations Committee finalized House Bill 1 last week leaving
massive budget cuts mostly intact.
What is the price of education? What is it worth to Texas? These are the questions lawmakers should be asking
parents, students and teachers. Is our future important? If so, let’s unite and work together to find additional revenue
across the State of Texas. There are a number of ideas that have been tossed around Austin, but nothing is currently
being considered. There are many sources of revenue that could help public education and could help the state deficit,
but the focus has only been on reductions. The number one revenue source for public education is sales tax. What
happens to the economy if 100,000 school employees across the state are out of work? Consumer spending goes
down. Sales tax revenue will continue to drop, hurting the source of education funding. This leads one to believe that in
2013-2014, we may still be in the same financial mess.
Many school districts across the state are eliminating teaching positions, increasing the size of classrooms and cutting
programs to accommodate the anticipated decline of state revenue. Just recently in the local papers you have seen a
reduction in force called by one local school, early resignation incentives being offered by several schools, and
probationary teachers being released.
At Gunter ISD, we have been planning for this over the past two years. Many school finance experts across the state
predicted this back in 2005 when the new finance system was introduced. Currently, our board and administration are in
preparation for the 2011-2012 fiscal year and have been since November, 2010. We have been looking at many ways to
accommodate the currently projected 11.3% reduction to our budget. We have decided not to replace 5 employees that
have retired or resigned their positions, which will save the District a great deal money. We also put together a list of
potential budget reductions and allowed our staff to participate in a survey made up of a group of employees from each
campus. This exercise will allow the Board to determine what is important to staff members across the district. The
mission of the Board is simple: Limit the negative impact to students and preserve the classroom instruction. Here at
Gunter ISD we will continue to work hard to continue to provide a quality life-changing education for every student.
As superintendent, I am asking each of you for help. If you support public education and believe our children should
be our number one priority, then band together and let your local Legislator know how you feel. It is important that we
let them know what education is worth to our community!
The GHS One Act Play cast and crew recently competed in the UIL
competition at NCTC in Gainesville. The group gave their best performance
of “Double Date” with everyone doing an amazing job. It is always a
challenge for OAP due to working around the students’ varied schedules.
This year provided an even bigger hurdle when lead actress Meghan
Mazerolle broke her leg a few weeks before the competition. Michelle Cole
stepped into the role, learned the lines quickly, and did a great job. Meghan
was there cheering us on and doing all she could to help Michelle as she
took on the role.
While sadly, we did not advance to the next level of competition, Mrs.
Kulbeth and Mrs. Hindman want all to know what an outstanding group of
actors and crew members we had this year. It was an honor to work with
them and we both look forward to next year, even though it is with great
reluctance that we let the seniors go.
Pies for Pets
While many students relaxed during spring break, five eighth
grade girls spent their time helping animals. Kayti Husted, Natalie
Cochran, Tristen Covington, Madison Parker and Cristin Connor
“randomly decided to make pies” and ended up earning $108 for
the no-kill animal shelter of Grayson County.
The girls baked homemade cherry, apple, peach, blueberry and
chocolate pies that sold for $3 or two for $5. They went door to
door in two subdivisions and sold out before meeting the demand
for pies. Fortunately, many people still chose to make a donation
to the cause.
Posters advertising “Pies for Pets,” “Pie It Up for Animals,” and
“Piece Love Pie” decorated a Polaris Ranger that carted the girls
around the neighborhoods. Great job, GMS students!
Texas Law Requires Success on Tests
Parents of students in grades 5 and 8 need to know about the Texas Student Success Initiative (SSI), which was passed in 1999 and
amended in 2009. The purpose of this law is to ensure that every student makes the academic progress necessary to show a
sufficient understanding of the knowledge and skills taught and tested at each grade level.
The amended SSI requires that students in grades 5 and 8 meet the passing standard on the TAKS or TAKS-M tests in reading and
math before they can be promoted. These testing requirements are part of an overall system of support for student academic
achievement that includes
Evaluation of student needs and academic support for students who need additional instruction
Ongoing evaluation of student progress during the school year
Three testing opportunities
Additional instruction after each test administration
A grade placement committee to determine the most effective way to support the child’s academic success
An instructional plan for every student who has not met the passing standard
The Student Success Initiative recognizes and supports the important role parents play in the education of their children. Your
child’s teacher and I depend on and look forward to working with you to help your child succeed. If you have questions or concerns,
I welcome the opportunity to meet with you. Please contact the school at 903-433-1545 to make an appointment.
trait is COURAGE. Students will participate in their
Core Essential Lesson on COURAGE on April 1st.
HUMILITY: Putting others first by giving up
what you think you deserve
Humility. What do you think of when you hear that
word? Many think of an embarrassing moment –
when you were humiliated right…but that is not what
we are talking about this month. Good thing huh!
Humility is related to the word HUMBLE and both
mean to put others first by giving up what you think
you deserve.
