Red Ribbon Week<br />

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program reaching millions of Americans during the last<br />

week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to<br />

live a drug-free life. <strong>The</strong> Elementary and Middle School campuses held dress up days and door decorating contests to emphasize<br />

the drug free message. At the Elementary, class door decorations were judged in three divisions. <strong>The</strong> winners were::<br />

Headstart - 1st grade division: Mrs. Mahana, Lifeskills - 4th grade division: Mrs. Locke, and Nurse Stacie won the other/<br />

instructional staff. Winners for the GMS homerooms were: 1st Place - Mrs. Schroeter and Mrs. Bailey, 2nd Place (3-way tie)<br />

- Mrs. Bon, Mrs. Breedlove and Mrs. Rodarmer.<br />

Current Enrollment Update: G<strong>ISD</strong> enrollment count 833: High School – 292, Middle School – 246, Elementary – 295.<br />

Honeywell Performance Based Contracting: Michael McDaniel from Honeywell presented to the board on performance based<br />

contracting. <strong>Gunter</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> is exploring ways to save money through facility upgrades to HVAC and lighting. <strong>The</strong> facility upgrades<br />

to these two areas could produce a substantial annual savings. Honeywell provides a facility analysis that will determine utility<br />

consumption and operational characteristics. <strong>The</strong> final output would identify efficiency measures and utility alternatives to reduce<br />

operating costs. <strong>The</strong> Board will continue to discuss this in future meetings.<br />

<strong>The</strong> board approved the 2011-2012 campus and district improvement plans as presented by Campus Principals and the District<br />

Curriculum Director.<br />

<strong>The</strong> board approved to join with the Texas Public Schools in the litigation of public finance matters essential to the fair treatment<br />

of Texas taxpayers and public school children.<br />

<strong>The</strong> board approved the revisions and changes to the current extracurricular policy.<br />

<strong>The</strong> board approved to tax goods in transit in accordance with Senate Bill I, and Tax Code 11.253.<br />

Technology Advances<br />

It’s hard to live in the world today and not notice how quickly technology is advancing. You’ve<br />

probably seen the commercial about the “new” television set that is outdated before it’s delivered!<br />

Whether dealing with “normal” budgets or the budget cuts of this summer, it has been hard for<br />

school districts to keep up.<br />

But we had a few exciting things happen this summer at GMS that have us MORE than just<br />

keeping up!<br />

First, wireless internet was added to our building. This is a huge step and makes other<br />

improvements easier. I’d like to offer a big thank you to Mr. Worthy for supporting our request<br />

for wireless and to Shelli Neely, Zach Allen, and Marilyn Davis for making it happen.<br />

Second, you’ve probably heard about our new policy regarding students bringing and using<br />

their own technology devices. This is an exciting new development at <strong>Gunter</strong> Middle School. It’s<br />

exciting for me to visit classes where students are in groups working on phones or tablets they’ve<br />

brought from home. Again, the wireless internet had to happen before this was possible.<br />

Third, we were fortunate to receive two new COWs, or Computers on Wheels. <strong>The</strong>se portable laptops are reserved by<br />

teachers for student use in the classroom. You should see the calendar! <strong>The</strong>y are used every day – some days by more<br />

than one class.<br />

So when you talk to your student about school, I hope you hear that technology is a part of their day at GMS. More and<br />

more, it’s a part of everyone’s day in both their job and personal life. We think school should look like life and are excited<br />

to have these advances in technology available for our teachers and students.<br />

Here’s one last thought on the subject: Parents, please be sure you are involved in your child’s use of technology.<br />

Monitor their internet use, limit their game play and texting. Know where their computers and cell phones are after<br />

9 pm. Just sayin’!<br />

G<strong>ISD</strong> app is here!<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Gunter</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> app is available in the iTunes store and<br />

the Android Market. It is a free app that will provide information<br />

right to you in an instant. If you have not downloaded it<br />

yet, be sure to get it.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is one very important thing you should know about<br />

the app. Many of the pages you see are actually pages from<br />

our website. Your phone will "remember" how a page looked<br />

when it loaded, and to load it faster, it will load that image of<br />

the page. If you want your app to give you the most "up to<br />

date" information, you will need to make sure it is a fresh<br />

load.<br />

If you see the blue GT at the beginning of the loading<br />

process, you will have the most up to date info. If you do not<br />

see the blue GT, you are probably loading a cached image.<br />

In order to refresh the app, you must stop the app and<br />

restart it.<br />

On iPhones, you double click the home button and press<br />

and hold the GT app at the bottom. When you see the red<br />

minus button on the apps across the bottom of your screen,<br />

press the minus sign to close the app. Press your home<br />

button again, and then start the app like you normally do.

Jessica Massey attended the state fair of Texas with<br />

her goat and placed 13 out of 34 entries.<br />

Victoria Osburn attended the state fair with her<br />

Holcomb all caught a calf at the first annual<br />

Grayson County Fair Calf Scramble. <strong>The</strong>y received<br />

a $500 voucher to purchase a calf and show it at<br />

the County shows in 2012.<br />

<strong>The</strong> mandatory goat clinic went well. All<br />

participants are exhibiting a goat at the Texoma<br />

Livestock Exposition in the spring. <strong>The</strong> clinic<br />

helped with showmanship skills and was a successful<br />

learning experience.<br />

GMS hosted a successful “Reading is Out of this World”<br />

Scholastic Book Fair to raise funds for library books and<br />

equipment.<br />

Mix it up - Make new friends<br />

<strong>Gunter</strong> Middle School was one of the more than 2,100 schools<br />

participating nationally in “Mix It Up-At Lunch Day” on<br />

October 18.<br />

Mix It Up-At Lunch Day is a national campaign launched by<br />

Teaching Tolerance that encourages students to identify,<br />

question and cross social boundaries.<br />

“...<strong>The</strong> simple space of a cafeteria table is, for many, a<br />

comfort zone where we can be ourselves with those who know<br />

us best. Touch base. Regroup. Let down the guard that classroom<br />

pressures often require of us. For others, the lunch room,<br />

with all its boundaries, is a world with its own pressures, a<br />

world of familiar strangers and rigid expectations.”<br />

On our first annual Mix It Up-At Lunch Day, the students<br />

were given a numbered ticket and then directed to sit at the<br />

corresponding table. To encourage conversation, entertaining<br />

questions were laid out for the students to discuss. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

questions included: "If you were an animal, what would you<br />

be?" and "If you won a million dollars, what would you do with<br />

it?"<br />

When the plans for the Mix It Up activity were first<br />

announced, students were skeptical, but most seemed to have<br />

fun participating in the activity. Many students and teachers<br />

requested having a Mix It Up activity more than once a year.<br />

Our hope is that by participating in activities such as Mix It<br />

Up- At Lunch Day, students will begin to break down social<br />

barriers and improve intergroup relations so there are fewer<br />

misunderstandings that can lead to conflict, bullying, and<br />

harassment.

Bible Round Up<br />

<strong>The</strong> GMS FCA completed a Bible<br />

drive this October. Students in the 7th<br />

and 8 th grades headed the round-up as<br />

the school collected a total of 40 new<br />

or gently used Bibles. <strong>The</strong>y will be<br />

given to Grace Bible Fellowship to<br />

take on their upcoming Thanksgiving<br />

mission trip to a New Mexican Indian<br />

2011 <strong>Gunter</strong> Robotics - BUGS!!!<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Gunter</strong> Robotics Team competed in the 19th annual<br />

North Texas Boosting, Engineering, Science and<br />

Technology (BEST) Robotics Competition this past Saturday<br />

in Howe. Our goal this year was to capture genetically<br />

engineered bugs and return them to the research<br />

lab from where they escaped.<br />

Fourteen area teams competed and <strong>Gunter</strong> Robotics<br />

came home with a 3rd place overall ranking while our<br />

robot placed 5th in the driving competition.<br />

We would like to thank Marion Cole, Leilani Holloway,<br />

Janet Johns, Deana Reed, Kelsey King, and Bobby Taylor<br />

for their support during the event. We couldn’t do<br />

what we do without your help! Thanks also to the<br />

Friday Nights with Coach Fieszel<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Gunter</strong> <strong>Tiger</strong>s are now undefeated in district and poised for a showdown in <strong>Gunter</strong><br />

with the Whitewright <strong>Tiger</strong>s.<br />

Whitewright is coached by Jack Wylie, who is in his first year as head coach after<br />

serving as defensive coordinator there for the last few years. Whitewright is as athletic<br />

as any team we have faced this year. <strong>The</strong>y are led by their Junior quarterback Tyrone<br />

Swoopes. He is a phenomenal talent, who will be playing anywhere he wants at the<br />

collegiate level.<br />

Whitewright also has another Division I Prospect, TE Gerron Ballard. Ballard plays on<br />

both sides of the ball, and will be a challenge for us to both block and cover.<br />

We are excited about the opportunity to play for an outright district championship and<br />

are looking forward to a physical, hard hitting game.<br />

We are thankful for all of the community support we have received this football season.<br />

Please come out and cheer on these young men as they pursue another district<br />
