The residents of theslums find occupational opportunitiesin the urban areas, while the towntakes advantage of their competitivelabour force in different businessesand the domestic sector. The inhabitantsof the slums serve the town, e.g.in form of day labor in one of the citiesconstruction businesses, or by providingessential services like rickshawdriving and waste collection, streetsweeping, providing domestic help orby selling small items in a stall on thestreet. IV. mymensinghMymensingh, located beside the BrahmaputraRiver in the north of Bangladesh,is one of the biggest and oldest Pourashavas(municipalities) in Bangladesh,covering around 22 km 2 . Due to migrationfrom the villages and rapid naturalpopulation growth within the city thenumber of inhabitants has rapidly increased.The Pourashava assumed 2005about 375.000 inhabitants. Almost halfof the population (45%) is considered as„poor“, many of them living in slums underbad conditions. All over the city, themunicipality counts 94 slum areas withaltogether more than 140.000 inhabitants.Similar to other towns, the slumdwellers are working as day laborer,rickshaw puller and hawkers or runningsmall businesses.
