TRUCKTIRENEWSNews and information from Goodyear Dunlop Tires / Volume 14 / Issue 1 / 2013Goodyear Dunlop -the key to economy

EDITORIALDear Reader,As a Finance Director I appreciate only too well the pressures that every fleet and vehicleoperator is under today to reduce operating costs and to maximize profits. It is thereforeappropriate that I am writing the introduction to this issue of Truck Tire News, which in particularlooks at the economies that Goodyear Dunlop offers to fleets. The features that follow have a common thread relating to the outstanding performance ofGoodyear Dunlop tires. Three of them are testimonials from customers, praising the performanceof our tires; in particular in relation to the exceptional mileage they give. Two other storiescover our most popular tires – the Goodyear Marathon Long Haul and Goodyear Regional Haulranges. In the case of the Long Haul tires, it is their low rolling resistance that can save a fleethundreds of thousands of euros in fuel costs. The Regional Haul range also helps keep downthe cost of diesel but it is the mileage benefits they offer that make these tires excel in particular.Products are one key aspect but, as in all areas of business, it is the people who make thedifference. In this respect, articles that follow also cover the appointment of Leszek Szafranas director of operations for our vital retread business, an award given to us by tire dealers inAustria and the direct technical support we provide to our customers to ensure that they getthe very best from our products.I hope you find this issue of Truck Tire News of value.Ben HogeFinance Director, Commercial TiresGoodyear Dunlop Europe, Middle East and AfricaCONTENTSGoodyear’s ‘Dream Team’ can save fleets over 200,000 euros each year .............................................................................................. 3Fleets and drivers prefer Goodyear Coach tire ............................................................................................................................................ 4Goodyear Dunlop Europe appoints new Retread Director ......................................................................................................................... 6Retreads star in Russian test .......................................................................................................................................................................... 7Goodyear Dunlop named European Top Employer ..................................................................................................................................... 8Goodyear ‘Best Truck Tire Brand’ for Austrian dealers .............................................................................................................................. 8Greater economy and shorter wet stopping distances from new Goodyear regional haul tires .......................................................... 9Average mileage of 400,000 kilometers makes Goodyear the choice for Karzol-Trans ........................................................................ 9A Day with a TruckForce technician ............................................................................................................................................................. 10Goodyear tires for world’s biggest semi-truck ........................................................................................................................................... 112News and information from Goodyear Dunlop Tires EuropePublished by Goodyear Dunlop Tires Operations S.A.Avenue Gordon Smith, 7750 Colmar-Berg, LuxembourgEditor: Boris Stevanovic, Marketing Director Truck Tires EuropePhone: +32 (0)2 761 18 43E-mail: TruckTire_News@goodyear.comWebsite: www.fleetfirst.eu

Goodyear’s ‘Dream Team’can save fleets over 200.000euros each yearLow rolling resistance means big savings for long haul fleetsSaving over 200.000 euros a year in fuelcosts may be a dream for some longhaul truck fleets but this is what a typical50-truck operator can expect thanks toGoodyear Marathon tires 1 . This is thereality when fitting the ‘Dream Team’ ofGoodyear LHS II+ steer tires, LHD II+drive tires and LHT II trailer tires inplace of tires graded D in fuel efficiencyaccording to the new EU tire labelregulation. A fleet of 50 trucks would notonly benefit from savings of more than200.000 euros in fuel costs, representingnearly 145.000 liters less diesel used, but also there would be a reduction incarbon dioxide emissions of 380 tonnes, which is very significant in terms of theenvironment.A typical five-axle 40 tonne articulatedtruck on long haul operations would save4.344 euros a year if covering 100.000kilometers with a fuel consumption of32,26 l/100km and a fuel cost of 1,50euros per liter 2 . This relates to 2.896 litersof fuel saved and a reduction in harmfulCO 2 emissions of 7.616 kilograms.“In these cost-conscious times it is veryeasy to just go for the cheapest optionbut that can be the most expensive,”said Boris Stevanovic, MarketingDirect or Truck Tires, Goodyear DunlopEMEA. “Thanks to the quality of thematerials used as well as the designsand technology, Goodyear Marathontires not only offer a fuel efficient solutionbut also provide high mileage and theability to be regrooved and retreaded, prolonging their life. We believe thatour tires offer genuine savings to bothoperators and the environment in termsof financial savings, reduced fuel use andless emissions.”There are also important benefits fromthe ‘Dream Team’ in terms of the superiorwet braking performance, which meanssignificantly shorter stopping distanceson wet roads.Operators can calculate the savingsthey can expect using the Goodyearfleet calculator, which is available free ofcharge on www.fleet-calculator.eu.Here they can enter the exact data fortheir vehicles and compare the resultsthat different tires will give them. The Goodyear Marathon range offers awide choice of sizes covering all popularapplications. Of these tires, 20% aregraded EU label grade B in fuel efficiencyand B in wet grip or above, and 95% areC in fuel efficiency and C in wet grip orabove, showing the superb performancelevels of Marathon tires.1The calculations are based on a typical 40 tonne 4x2 tractor unit and tri-axle trailer combination, an annual mileage of100.000 kms, a fuel consumption of 32,3 l/100km and a diesel price of 1,50 euros per liter.2Goodyear Marathon LHS II+ and LHD II+ in size 315/70R22.5; LHT II in size 385/55R22.5, which have EU label grades relatingto fuel efficiency of respectively B, C and A, have been compared to same sizes with tires graded D in fuel efficiency.3

Retreads star in Russian testThe result proves the value of extended tire lifeRussian truck fleet Mosavtotrans hasbeen running a test to compare newGoodyear Regional Haul tires withNextTread equivalent retreads andthe results underline the exceptionalperformance that Goodyear retreadsoffer. The test runs for twelve months fromApril 2012 and involves two MAN TGAtractors pulling Schmitz refrigeratedtrailers. The vehicles carry medicines, groceries and other perishable cargoson intercity routes connecting Moscowto the eastern and northern regions ofRussia, with the most distant destinationin the east being Irkutsk, and in the northMurmansk. One truck was equipped with newGoodyear Regional RHS II, RHD IIand RHT tires and the other fitted withNextTread RHD II and RHT tires on thedrive and trailer axles. Despite a verysevere winter with heavy snow andblizzards, the monthly mileage of eachtruck exceeded 13.000 km with virtuallyno downtime. The truck with new tires covered 99.500kilometers and the Goodyear RegionalRHS II steer tires started the test with15,7 mm tread depth and ended at 9,4and 9,3 mm respectively. The RegionalRHD II drive tires started with 20,5mm and ended with between 14,2 and15,3 mm. The trailer tires started with16,4 mm and ended with between 9,7and 13,2 mm, with five of the six tireshaving 11 mm or more tread remaining. The NextTread retreaded tires showedsimilar results on the second truck, whichcovered 102.400 kilometers. The steertires, which were also new GoodyearRegional RHS II, started with 15,7 mmand ended with 11,3 and 10 mm. TheNextTread RHD II drive tires started with20 mm of tread and ended with between13,5 and 12 mm. The NextTread RHTtrailer tires started with 15 mm andended with between 12,8 and 9,7 mm,with five of the six tires having 10,1 mmor more tread remaining. The wear in winter has been very lowas is the normal case in such winterconditions. The differential in the trailertire wear can be explained by the factthat the trailers did not have lift axles,so tire scrub when maneuvering was afactor.Alexey Platov Director Commercial Tires,Goodyear Russia said, “Today all fleetsare looking for maximum profitabilityfrom the tires they purchase. This testconfirms my belief that NextTreadtires help to extend the fuel efficiencyand mileage benefits provided by newGoodyear tires. As the price of retreadtires is one third lower than that ofnew tires, they make a considerableoperational saving for fleets.”The results so far prove that the performanceof retreaded tires, in terms of theireconomic benefits as well as their abilityto perform well in all conditions, cannotbe underestimated in maximizing theeconomic life of tires. The test, whichcontinues, is being run in conjunctionwith media partner Avtopark, whichprovided the information and photographused in this feature.7

A Day with a TruckForcetechnicianTruckForce UK gives a leading journalist ‘behind the scenes’ access to showthe benefits of its dedicated networkTruckForce UK recently invited a leadingjournalist to join one of its techniciansfor the day to see what the job entails.David Wilson, from Commercial TyreBusiness, spent a day with TruckForce’shighly skilled team from its service hubin Cheshire. The reason? To gain a betterunderstanding of the benefits availableto fleets by having a specialist team tomanage their tire policies. The day started by explaining to Davidthat TruckForce UK comprises a mix ofequity owned and independent serviceproviders, which are supported by 15service hubs located strategically aroundthe country. It was further explained thattechnicians take care of service breakdownsfor TruckForce customers whouse the ActionLine 24 hour emergencyroadside assistance service, and contractwork for regular fleet customers. To see the service in action, one of theports of call was to a key distributionhub for UK major supermarket chain andTruckForce fleet customer Morrisons. From this site alone, the company’strucks cover over 480,000 kilometersper week.Morrisons has a technician based at itspremises, which simplifies vehicle servicingby taking the pressure off the companyfor tire-related issues and by takinga preventative, rather than reactive, approachto tire maintenance. Ian Todd, theTruckForce technician there, spends histime on site monitoring the fleet of tractorsand trailers, checking the tires fortread depth and damage. Any tires thatneed regrooving, he does there himselfas well as changing tires, which can bedone immediately thanks to the stock ofkey sizes he keeps in his van. He alsocarries out minor repairs and identifiesmajor repairs to be sent away.Ian Todd’s expertise is much appreciatedby the General Manager ofMorrisons’ Vehicle Maintenance Unit, who also enjoys the simplified controloffered by TruckForce’s fleet service offering.TruckForce goes the extra milefor the fleets it services, creating customerspecific product support material. For example, specific tire maintenanceboards are currently being installed inMorrisons depots across the UK.The boards provide the correct pressuresfor Goodyear tires, stating consequencesof under or over inflated tires. They also show tire pattern images toassist regrooving and tire labelling information, reinforcing what the label is andwhat its three criteria represent.TruckForce prides itself on ensuring thatfleet operators receive the best in tirecare and gain positively from bespoketire husbandry. The TruckForce networkhelps drive down the operating costs offleets of all sizes. Providing a service tobusinesses such as Morrisons, ensuresthat they obtain the best possible performancefrom their tires. At the end of the day, David Wilson wasdelighted with the insight he gained intothe TruckForce business and was impressedby the service and attention thatTruckForce provides to its customers.10
