School Captains and House Captains
We would appreciate greatly if all new families could register for our newsletter Online. Thank you.
I would like to congratulate the staff and students involved in the process of selecting and electing School and house Captains and
Vice Captains. It was very professionally organised and I’m sure that the children gained a great insight into the democratic
process.
Of course, with elections, there are successful and unsuccessful candidates – joy and disappointment. However, the quality of the
applications, interviews and speeches was most impressive and the final decisions were very difficult.
I congratulate all candidates for taking the time to submit their applications.
Congratulations to the following students who have been selected as School Captains and Vice Captains for 2012.
Air Conditioning in the Arts Building
Air conditioning was been installed in the Arts last week. This
has been made possible through parents’ contribution to the
Building Fund as part of school fees. I thank parents for their
wonderful support in making this possible so early in the
year.
Contributions to the Building Fund are tax deductible and
can be made at any time.
Thanks to the previous fund raising efforts of the Parents’
Association, all classrooms bar the Cross Building now have
air conditioning.
Prep and New Parent Helpers Induction Friday 9 th March
following assembly
Parents are their children’s first teachers. At Sunbury
Primary School we value the contribution parents make to
children’s education.
Parents can contribute in a variety of ways. Some are listed
below:
• Assisting in classroom programs
• Helping in the canteen
• Attending various school events
• Assisting at sporting events, excursions and camps
• Becoming a member of school council
• Attending working bees
A parent helpers’ induction will be held on Friday, 9 th March
following assembly in the Bath House. Further information
will be sent home next week.
Parent helpers are required to have a Working With
Children (WWC) check. For volunteers, these checks are
conducted free of charge. WWC forms are available from
any post office or at the school office. Please be proactive
and organise these checks now.
Notes regarding the induction have been sent home. Please
return your RSVP.
Arrangements for collecting children
From time to time parents call to collect children from school
before the end of the school day.
In order to minimise disruption to school programs and
ensure the safety of our students, parents are asked to come
to the front office to complete the Early Dismissal Form and
take it to the child’s teacher before collecting their child.
Following this simple procedure will ensure a smooth exit
with a minimum of fuss for children who leave school early.
Sunbury Primary School is hosting a family Mathematicsaths afternoon on Thursday 15 th March from 2:30pm – 3:30pm.
This afternoon is our official launch into our Mathematics Initiative. At the end of 2011 we were very fortunate to be
selected as a Mathematics Specialist School and we now have three teachers funded to focus on Mathematics in our
school for the next two years. Sarah Tucker, Yvonne Corcoran and Greg Purcell are our Mathematics specialists and
each spend 0.5 of their time dedicated to Mathematics.
We encourage all parents to come along and work with their children to solve Mathematics problems, see what
Mathematics looks like at Sunbury Primary School and learn new games and activities you can use to support your
children’s learning of Mathematics.
Students will be placed in family groups for the afternoon to work together.
So put this date in your diary and look out for more information to come.
Eating for peak school performance
By Kidspot Team www.kidspot.com.au | This article was supplied by the team of Nutritionists at Kellogg's for Kidspot, Australia’s leading education resource for parents.
Hungry minds need to eat breakfast. For schoolkids, breakfast really is an important way to start the day. Why? Research shows kids who eat
breakfast are more likely to be focused than those who skip breakfast. So it’s important to send your kids off to school with breakfast
Healthy breakfast ideas
Who could concentrate on geography and science when their tummy is rumbling? Fibre expands in the stomach, which helps kids feel fuller for longer. This means
they can focus on learning, instead of their hunger pains!
Some ideas for a healthy breakfast include:
• Two slices of wholemeal toast and an egg, 5.0g of fibre
• Two slices of multigrain toast and two teaspoons of peanut butter, 5.5 g of fibre
• One cup of fresh fruit salad and 100g low fat yoghurt, 5.6 g of fibre
• A 45g serve of very high-fibre cereal such as Kellogg's Sultana Bran (6.7g of fibre) or Sultana Bran (7.1g fibre) with half a cup of skim milk.
Simple ways to encourage your child to eat breakfast
Not all children wake up and feel ready to eat a healthy breakfast, but simple household routines can help your child such as:
• Make time for breakfast – turn off the TV!
• Eat together and talk about the day ahead.
• Set the table the night before.
• Make plenty of fresh fruit available.
