Package 5: Improved Solar Cabinet DryerTo eliminate some of the drawbacks experienced in the classical solar cabinet dryers,RECAST incorporated some modifications and improved the design. Theimprovements were mainly aimed at enhancing the thermal performance andoperational convenience, and reducing the cost.Design DetailsThe improved solar cabinet dryer consists of an air-heating solar collector, a dryingchamber, and a chimney attached to the drying chamber at the top. Ambient air isheated by the solar collector, and the hot air is passed through the drying chamberwhere products to be dried are loaded. The products are spread into thin layers onseveral trays inside the drying cabinet, to facilitate better contact of drying air withthe product. Warm moist air from inside the drying chamber exits to the atmospherethrough the chimney at the top, assisted by draft created in the chimney.The dryer was constructed using wood sections, GI sheets and aluminium sheets.Window glass was used as glazing for the solar collector, and glass wool for thermalinsulation. Mild steel angles were used for fabricating the frames.
