VRQ Level 2 Certificate in Youth WorkThe Level 2 qualification is designed for people working in a youth work setting(statutory or voluntary, paid or unpaid) who are either new to youth work and whosework is closely supervised, or for people who have experience of youth work and wantan access route to a qualification.The Level 2 Certificate Course covers the following 6 units:UnitThe unit will explore the following:1 Engaging young people in l Developing communication skills and buildingrelationships and conversations trusting relationshipsl Issues that affect young people’s livesl An introduction to Young People’s Developmentl The role of the youth worker2 Promoting a safe environment in l Policies and procedures that apply to youth workyouth worke.g. Child Protection and risk assessmentsl Working with young people who are distressedl The professional boundaries of a youth worker3 Equality, Diversity and l How prejudice, discrimination and oppressiveParticipationbehaviour affect the lives of young people andhow to help them to challenge prejudicel How to value and celebrate diversityl Causes of non-participation and how to solve itl Involving young people in decision makingabout issues that affect their lives4 Understanding and reflecting on l How our values and attitudes affect our youthpractice and learningwork practicel The learning cyclel Monitoring and reviewing youth work practicel Giving and receiving feedback5 Encouraging young people to l Factors that impact on young peopledevelop awareness andl Reflection techniques to use with young peopleunderstanding of themselves l Working with young people to create anatmosphere of mutual respect6 Young people as active citizens l The value of communitiesl The range of organisations involved in localpolicy makingl Factors that affect young people’s involvementin decision making in their own lives and theircommunitiesA minimum of 180 guided learning hours are necessary for the satisfactory completionof the Level 2 qualification, this is broken down as follows:l Training workshops (approx) 36 hoursl Tutorial hours with training supervisor (approx) 9 hoursl Supervision session with line manager (approx) 6 hoursl Placement hours (approx) 90 hoursl Building a portfolio (approx) 39 hours11
