ACTIFLO®The ultimate clarifierCoagulation, ballasted flocculationand settling for:•drinking water•process water• wastewater

Ballasted clarification for a very high rateand compact processActiflo® is a compact process that operates with microsand (Actisand)as a seed for floc formation. Actisand provides surface area that enhancesflocculation and also acts as a ballast or weight to aid a rapid settlement.Actiflo® is recommended for:> surface water clarification,> industrial process water production,> wastewater treatment,> storm flow water settlement.Actiflo®: compactness displaying its true potentialThe microsand ballasted flocs display unique settling characteristics, which allowfor clarifier designs with very high overflow rates and short retention times. These designs result in footprints that are 5 times smaller than classic lamellaclarifier or dissolved air flotation (DAF) and up to 20 times smaller thanconventional clarification systems.Major process benefitsHigh treatment efficiency;removal rate of turbidity > 90%Very small footprint compared toconventional clarifiers; suited forrestricted spaces and easy retrofitof existing plantsReduced civil engineeringFlexible: reacts quickly to changingraw water quality; providesconsistently high quality effluentVery short start-up time < 10 minutesThe sludge produced can be thickenedand dewatered easilyCan be entirely automatedand remotely controlledMinimum equipment to maintain, all easily accessible15 years of operating experiencewith more than 300 Actiflo®references worldwidePrefabricated package plants(1 000 to 10 000 m 3 /d per unit)which can be combined for largerflow ratesFlat bottom clarifier0.5-1.5 m/hr.Sludge blanketclarifier 4 m/hr.DAF or lamellaclarifier 10-15 m/hr.Actiflo®> 40 m/hr.Sludge blanketclarifier180 000 m 3 /dActiflo 180 000 m 3 /dOverview of the Iver plant, London - Heathrow (United Kingdom).Clarification, interozonation and granular activated carbon filtrationfor drinking water production.

Actiflo®: rapid, flexible and performantActiflo® is a very high-rate clarifier exclusivelydeveloped and patented by Veolia WaterSolutions & Technologies.■In drinking water applications, its removalefficiency exceeds 90% for turbidity, colour, algae or arsenic;■ In wastewater applications, it consistentlyproduces high quality water, even in varyingraw water conditions, with removal efficiency:> higher than 90% for total suspended solids(TSS), colloidal matter, total phosphorus, heavy metals and faecal coliforms,■ > of 60% for BOD and COD.Depending on the application, the following upflow velocities areconsistently achieved:> drinking water: 40-80 m/hr.> process water: 50-100 m/hr.> highly loaded industrial effluents or municipal wastewater:50-100 m/hr.> primary treatment of wastewater or storm flow treatment:100-150 m/hr.For applications requiring a high turn down ratio, Actiflo® can alsooperate with microsand recirculation at a high overflow rate andwithout microsand at a rise rate lower than 20 m/hr. The microsandis simply stored in the process at low flows until it is required again. In this configuration, Actiflo® then becomes a conventional lamellaclarifier (Actiflo® Duo). The Actiflo® processRecirculation: the sludge is pumped to the hydrocyclone to beseparated from the microsand. The clean microsand is returnedinto the injection tank to minimize loss; the sludge iscontinuously removed for further processing. To sludgetreatmentHydrocyclone5CoagulantAcid or limeClarifiedwater41RawwaterPolymer3Coagulation stage:a coagulant suchas an iron oraluminium saltis added to theraw water.2Injection tank: the flocsproduced during thecoagulation stage areballasted by the densemicrosand, which iscontinuously reinjectedinto the process.Maturation tank: fittedwith a mixer designedto produce the optimumvelocity gradients, itallows flocs to swelland mature.Counter current lamella clarification:it allows a fast settling of the microsandballasted sludge.

Actiflo®: a versatile range of usesDrinking waterActiflo® applies to both surface and ground waterwhere improved performance and/or capital costreduction is desired. It is ideally suited for thetreatment of:> rapidly fluctuating watersources,> low temperature water (1°C),> reservoir water with very lowturbidity,> sea or brackish water.Through the use of Actisand TM , Actiflo® achievesbetter performance than all existing clarificationprocesses, displaying consistent removal of:> turbidity, colour, total organic carbon (TOC),> algae, particle count, pathogens, cryptosporidium,> oxidised iron, manganese and arsenic...Actiflo® is particularly efficient to remove taste andodour associated with algal bloom. It can also be usedfor the recovery of backwash water from rapid gravityfilter thus reducing water loss and running costs.WastewaterActiflo® can be used in most municipalapplications:> primary settlement: due to the mass ofmicrosand constantly in the process, Actiflo®handles very swift raw water qualityvariations and rapid flow changes;> treatment of biofilter backwash water: dueto its short residence time, the biologicalsludge is unlikely to go septic; it is thereforeclarified extremely efficiently, with superiorlevels of treatment compared to flotation;> clarification of trickling filter effluents, inreplacement of a conventional clarifier;> storm water treatment (combined sewer overflow): Actiflo®treats storm peak flows as they occur. In combination with UVdisinfection (Actistar), it delivers an effluent compliant withthe most stringent bathing and shellfish water directives;> tertiary polishing or phosphorus removal: whether it is usedfor suspended solids, colour or phosphorus removal, Actiflo®meets or exceeds water quality standards with removal ratesusually higher than 90%. The same Actiflo® unit applies tostorm flow treatment in peak flow and to tertiary treatmentin dry flow conditions, with a significant removal of hormones(endocrine perturbators) for the latter;> water reuse for crop irrigation or aquifer recharge, in combinationwith Discfilter and UV disinfection (Actidisc Plus).Industrial water and effluentsActiflo® is an idealsolution for the recyclingof process waterand pre-treatment ofboiler feed or coolingtower make-up water.Similarly it treats anytype of process wateras well as most industrialeffluents.> solids and colour removal: prior to membranetreatment, reverse osmosis (Actimem), or incombination with Discfilter (Actidisc), to produceprocess water for the pulp and paper or food industry;> removal of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, zinc…)and ashes from power plant and steel milleffluents, or polishing treatment to removesuspended solids and associated pollutants;> lime soda softening (Actisoft) for the productionof demineralised water.

Actiflo® Package Plant:fast-track and modular solutionsActiflo®mobile plantTo demonstrate the effectivenessof the Actiflo® process, the services of an Actiflo® mobileplant equipped with laboratory canbe provided. This unit is housed in a shippingcontainer, mounted on a trailer, andonce delivered on site it can beoperational within hours. For small to medium-sized applications (1 000 to 10 000 m 3 /d), a rangeof package plant solutions has been designed, also providingbuilt-in sand filtration (Actifloc®) or sludge thickening (in combinationwith Actidyn) when required. The range of Actiflo® mobile plants(from 40 to 160 m 3 /hr.) can alsoprovide temporary treatmentduring plant failure or unforseenflow or quality variations.■ These units can be set in a multiple stream arrangement to handlemuch larger flows; they are ideal when low cost fast-track, pre-testedtreatment units are required.■These package plants, manufactured in stainless steel or glassreinforced plastic, can be delivered on a trailer and installed withindays. The layout of these package solutions is extremely flexible andcan be “shoe horned” into the most constrained sites.
