<strong>John</strong> <strong>Martin</strong>1789 ~ 1854Born in Haydon Bridge, <strong>John</strong> <strong>Martin</strong> became the mostpopular artist of his day. His paintings are frequentlybased on biblical stories, reflecting his religious upbringing.Thyeare set in dramatic landscapes, possiblyinspired by the countryside of his youth.The trail visits many of the places associated with <strong>John</strong><strong>Martin</strong>: East Land Ends Cottage where he was born; thechurches where he worshipped, Haydon Old Churchand St. Cuthbert’s; Shaftoe School where he was apupil; Langley Castle, Allen Banks and Staward Gorge.<strong>John</strong> <strong>Martin</strong> left Haydon Bridge when he was fourteen towork in Newcastle and he then moved to London. Hedied in Douglas, on the Isle of Man, where he is buried.There is an exhibition of prints of <strong>John</strong> <strong>Martin</strong>’s work inHaydon Bridge Community Centre. Walking the Trail<strong>John</strong> <strong>Martin</strong> Heritage TrailNorthern Sectioni= Information panelWestHaydonFarmEastHaydonFarmHaydon Old ChurchThe <strong>John</strong> <strong>Martin</strong> Heritage Trail is in two circularsections centred on Haydon Bridge.
