ISS Sports NewsAthleticsAs the end of the 2007-2008 school year is fast approaching, theathletics calendar is still packed with events. The softball, rugby, and track and field teams are closing their seasons and the springsports awards are in June. Many thanks to all athletes, parentsand coaches who have helped make this year a successful yearin athletics. We have successfully participated in local leagueswith some top finishes, come home from tournaments withsportsmanship trophies, second and third place wins, and wehave worked hard and have loads of stories of fun and learningexperiences. Dedication and discipline from students, parents, and coaches have helped the seasons run smoothly. We lookforward to building on this year’s success when we begin nextAugust. Thank you to everyone involved this year. However, as I mentioned, we still have a packed calendar as wehave events up until the last week of school. Congratulations andgood luck to all athletes in the upcoming NECIS tournaments.SoftballThe softball team recently took a team of parents and a team ofteacher to bat. All teams seemed to enjoy the games. Thank youto all who participated.RugbyAs this informer is going to print, the Rugby team is traveling toAntwerp, Belgium, for the NECIS tournament. Congratulationsto the entire rugby team and their coach, Jean Pierre Duc, for asuccessful 2007 season. Seniors David Smith, GregMathews, Alexander Smith, Steven Brewster and Michael Taylorhave all played rugby with each other for the last two plus seasonsand are heavily favored to bring the NECIS rugby championshiptrophy back to Stavanger on the 28th of May.With all but one returning starter from the team that got secondplace at last year’s tournament, losing by one try in the final andan undefeated record this season, “the pressure is on” says GregMathews. But under the unwavering leadership of Coach Jean-Pierre Duc, the Goats feel that they can pull this one off.“We have been through a lot together” says ISS’s starting hooker,David Smith, who couldn’t have been more correct as the fiveseniors and “JP”, as the boys call their coach, have squeezedinto the ISS van to wage battle with rugby teams from all overNorway. As the boys prepare to graduate and pass the torch on toa younger, promising generation of Green Goats, emotions runhigh. “I’m definitely going to miss these guys. Throughout allthe awkward and trying times of high school, the Green Goatshas been a constant comforting place for all us” says Alex Smith;the other seniors agree. This isn’t the end of their rugby careers though, asDavid plans to play at Utah State, Steven at the University ofOklahoma, Michael at the College of William and Mary, Gregplans to start a rugby team at Trinity and Alex at a local clubteam in either Edinburgh or Dublin. They all recognize theimportance of their last tournament together and realize that allgood things must come to an end.--Mike Taylor, 2007Track and FieldAlso, this weekend is a track and field tournament in Copenhagen,Denmark.
