8. Fault finding8.1 IntroductionThe TURBOmax has built in diagnosticindicator lights (fig. 77) to assist youwith fault finding in the unlikely eventof a boiler malfunction. The lights willilluminate in sequence, indicating theoperational status of the boiler e.g.Power on indicator (green)Illuminates when the electricity supplyto the boiler is on, the main on/offcontrol is set to position ( ) and theinternal boiler fuses are o.k.Hot water demand indicator (yellow)Illuminates whenever there is ademand for hot water i.e. a hot watertap is opened.Central heating demand indicator(yellow)Illuminates whenever there is ademand for central heating i.e. thecentral heating control is set to position( ) and the external heatingcontrols are calling for heat.Note: If the external controls are notcalling for heat (i.e. the roomthermostat has reached temperature)this indicator will go out. This isperfectly normal.Fan operation indicator (yellow)Illuminates to indicate that the fan isoperating and has been checked bythe fan pressure switch,Ignition indicator (yellow)Illuminates when gas valve, operatorand ignition transformer are energised. This indicator remains on duringburner operation.Flame indicator (yellow)Illuminates when flame is recognisedby the flame monitoring systemBurner lockout indicator (red)Illuminates if the burner fails to lightwithin 10 seconds of the ignitionindicator. This light will also illuminateif the burner has been prevented fromlighting due to lack of water or poorwater circulation. To reset the appliance after a lockout, turn the central heating control to thereset position ( ) and release.8.2 Logical fault findingprocedure8.2.1 Preliminary ChecksThese checks must be carried outbefore attempting to use the faultfinding guide:-1) Carry out electrical safety checks(see Section 5.1: Preliminaryelectrical checks).2) Check that the external electricitysupply to the boiler is on, and asupply of 230V~ is presentbetween boiler terminals 'L' and 'N'.3) Check that gas supply to the boileris on and that it has been correctlypurged(see Section 5.2: Gas Supply).4) Ensure the heating system is full ofwater and charged to approx. 1Bar. If not refill the system and vent(see section 5.4: Filling the heatingsystem). Ensure boiler flow andreturn service valves are open.5) Check that boiler main on/offcontrol is set to position ( )fig. 776) Set boiler central heating control toHeating and Hot Water position( )7) Ensure that the Maximum RadiatorTemperature and Maximum HotWater Temperature controls are setto position '9'.8) Check that all the external controlsare on and calling for heat (if noexternal controls are fitted, boilerterminals 3 and 4 must be linked).Check that boiler anti-cycling'economiser' control is not engaged(see Section 4.8.5).8.2.2 ProcedureNote: Always check the operation ofthe boiler for central heating firstbefore checking hot water operation.Do not open a hot tap unless instructedto by the fault finding guide.GW 618/044
