Even on gun control,polls in many parts of the nationshow 80% to 90% refuse to acceptthe insane dictates of the gunindustry and their National RifleAssociation, with their thoughtlessRepublican representatives, toblock effective background checksand related matters concerning gunsales. Perhaps next year, in the 2014national elections, the voters will finallyeliminate the insanities of theRepublican Party.Still the underlying questionremains, aside from such corporategreed, how can we understand thepervasive self-destructive views thatfacilitate the dozens of recent massmurders and thousands of otherrecent gun murders in our countrythat destroys so much of our AmericanWay of Life as well decent lifearound the world?In a recent column I touchedupon the answer offered by a Britishpsychiatrist. Dr. Spencer Pattersondescribed his wild theoryto me over a half-century ago. Heoutlined his explanation of the universalKill Drive.He quickly added the compensating,contrasting existence of theuniversal Love Drive. We do wantthe warmth, cooperation, and assistanceof others: to be unified, associatedclosely with others: a spouse,family, and even many others. Butcertainly Darwin understood thatin all stages and forms of evolutionall life forms first seek survival includingelimination of threats andeven success in the challenges ofcompetition, called Survival of theFittest.Patterson pointed out that allelse in life, or at least all others can,or even should, be considered tosome degree or other, nominal orimmediately threatening, a challengeor threat to us.
