postgraduate program is specifically designed to exp<strong>and</strong> participants’ local <strong>and</strong>international professional network. The language of instruction is English.The courses are conducted over 18 months through live-in weekend (Saturday-Sunday) sessions in Hong Kong allowing participants from Hong Kong <strong>and</strong> SouthernChina to attend. The programs include compulsory study trips to visit technologycompanies in the Pearl River Delta <strong>and</strong> optional study trips abroad.In October 2001, 20 participants went on an optional study trip to the US, coveringSilicon Valley, the Boston area <strong>and</strong> Philadelphia in seven days. They visitedcompanies such as Intel, Cisco <strong>and</strong> Webex on the West Coast, <strong>and</strong> MIT <strong>and</strong> the twostart-up companies, Sycamore <strong>and</strong> Unisphere, in the Boston area. In Philadelphia,they met up with participants from the Executive MTM program at theEngineering/Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. They reciprocatedthis hospitality when a group from U Penn visited Hong Kong in February 2002.In August 2001, the Dean of Engineering Prof Kang L Wang, signed a memor<strong>and</strong>umof agreement with the School of Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University tolaunch the Master of Technology Management program in Shanghai. The ExecutiveMaster of Technology Management program commenced in Shanghai in September2002.In February 2002, the School of Engineering <strong>and</strong> the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) School of Engineering & Applied Science signed a statement of StrategicAlliance enabling closer collaboration <strong>and</strong> coordination in their executive technologymanagement programs <strong>and</strong> further enhancing the popular MTM program.As a result of the alliance, U Penn will now host HKUST MTM program participantsfor a one-week course <strong>and</strong> study trip on emerging technologies <strong>and</strong> markets. Thestudy trip will be m<strong>and</strong>atory for participants of the Hong Kong program <strong>and</strong> optionalfor participants from the Shanghai program. The one-week course, held inPhiladelphia, is given by faculty from U Penn's Engineering School <strong>and</strong> WhartonSchool. Visits to both leading companies <strong>and</strong> startups in these emergingtechnologies <strong>and</strong> markets will be incorporated.The Global Logistics Management program has been granted exemption from LevelThree, <strong>and</strong> E-business for Transport <strong>and</strong> Logistics at Level Two, of the professionalqualifying examination of the Chartered Institute of Logistics <strong>and</strong> Transport (CILT).Graduates of the program who are already CILT associate members will beconsidered as meeting the educational requirements for CILT Charteredmembership.Master of Science in IC Design Engineering (MScICDE)http://www.<strong>seng</strong>.ust.hk/msc/icdeThe IC industry is seen as a growing field in the Chinese Mainl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> it isestimated that between 100,000-300,000 IC design engineers will be required inChina in the next decade.The MSc ICDE is a part-time degree program designed for professionals with aBachelor’s degree in science or engineering who are interested to acquire in-depthknowledge in microelectronics engineering.Lectures are held at convenient locations in the Chinese Mainl<strong>and</strong> at the weekends<strong>and</strong>/or during the evenings. With the rapid growth of newtechnologies, technology professionals, managers <strong>and</strong> telecommunicationprofessionals must keep themselves up-to-date with the latest developments.The MSc program in Telecommunications is a part-time degree designedfor professionals with a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering whoare interested in acquiring further in-depth knowledge in the field oftelecommunications.The course covers topics including the latest developments in wireless systems,optical networking, broadb<strong>and</strong> multimedia communications <strong>and</strong> convergenceprotocols.The duration of the course is two years, with classes held either at HKUST orlocations in Hong Kong at weekends <strong>and</strong>/or evenings. The growing need for state-of-the-art logistics management has made this course apopular choice since it began in 1999. The part-time program is targeted atmanagers <strong>and</strong> engineers employed in the transport, logistics, distribution, <strong>and</strong>related sectors. Its objective is to equip such professionals with the expertise ofplanning, implementing <strong>and</strong> managing logistics activities.The program helps participants to network with professionals from differentindustrial sectors from the South China region.
