Bass Coast is rich in historical significance, it is home
to a diverse range of Aboriginal cultural heritage
sites, the Bunurong people were among the first in
Victoria to make contact with European mariners
and explorers. Bass Coast is home to sites of the first
white settlement in Victoria.
To learn more about this fascinating history visit one
of Bass Coast’s heritage museums.
Wonthaggi Centenary
Bass Coast Council and the Wonthaggi Community
began celebrating the Wonthaggi Centenary in 2009.
Celebrations will continue until February 2011.
There are various activities planned for the Centenary
throughout 2010 and early 2011:
• March you can come along to the resurrected
Wonthaggi Hospital Garden Party
• May will see a reunion of the Wonthaggi Citizens
band and an exhibition organised by the Bass Coast
Arts and Cultural Forum
• August you can attend the Wonthaggi Theatrical
Group performance of The Wonthaggi Celebration
• September is a Reunion Weekend
• February 2011 the celebrations will end with the
Centenary of the Borough of Wonthaggi.

Council’s collection started in 1990 and includes
works by prominent local and some Melbourne,
artists. The works have been acquired mostly
through local arts shows, donations, gifts and direct
purchases. Due to a lack of available space and
for security reasons, it is not possible to have the
entire collection on permanent public display. To
