<strong>Bass</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> is rich in historical significance, it is home<br />

to a diverse range of Aboriginal cultural heritage<br />

sites, the Bunurong people were among the first in<br />

Victoria to make contact with European mariners<br />

and explorers. <strong>Bass</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> is home to sites of the first<br />

white settlement in Victoria.<br />

To learn more about this fascinating history visit one<br />

of <strong>Bass</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>’s heritage museums.<br />

Wonthaggi Centenary<br />

<strong>Bass</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Council</strong> and the Wonthaggi Community<br />

began celebrating the Wonthaggi Centenary in 2009.<br />

Celebrations will continue until February 2011.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are various activities planned for the Centenary<br />

throughout 2010 and early 2011:<br />

• March you can come along to the resurrected<br />

Wonthaggi Hospital Garden Party<br />

• May will see a reunion of the Wonthaggi Citizens<br />

band and an exhibition organised by the <strong>Bass</strong> <strong>Coast</strong><br />

<strong>Arts</strong> and Cultural Forum<br />

• August you can attend the Wonthaggi <strong>The</strong>atrical<br />

Group performance of <strong>The</strong> Wonthaggi Celebration<br />

• September is a Reunion Weekend<br />

• February 2011 the celebrations will end with the<br />

Centenary of the Borough of Wonthaggi.<br />

visual art collection<br />

<strong>Council</strong>’s collection started in 1990 and includes<br />

works by prominent local and some Melbourne,<br />

artists. <strong>The</strong> works have been acquired mostly<br />

through local arts shows, donations, gifts and direct<br />

purchases. Due to a lack of available space and<br />

for security reasons, it is not possible to have the<br />

entire collection on permanent public display. To<br />
