5.2.3 AgeingFigure 83: Percentage in ethnic group 292The region's general population is ageing, with a bulge of people in the 35 to 55 yearage group. About half (51 per cent) of the people living in our region are aged 35 yearsand older. This feature is less pronounced in Hamilton, as illustrated in figure 84.Figure 84: Age and gender cohorts for Hamilton city and rest of <strong>Waikato</strong> regionThe median age is lower than most other regions, with the exception of Auckland,Wellington and Gisborne. The <strong>Waikato</strong> birthrate is higher than average, and the netmigration rate is around the national average. Only Auckland and Wellington areexpected to have more people aged less than 65 in 2026, as shown in figure 85.292The totals are greater than 100 per cent because people can identify with more than one ethnicity.Page 80 Doc #: 2069885
