Figure 46: Accommodation and food services exportsby territorial authority ($m 2007)Figure 47: Accommodation and food services businessunits by employee count (2010)Hamilton city is the largestprovider of accommodation, restaurants and bars, contributing 43 per cent ofinter-regionalandinternational exports from thissector. Taupō, Waikato,Thames-Coromandel andWaipa districts also havesignificant sectors, asillustrated by figure 46.A district does not necessarilyneed to be a touristdestination in order to benefitfrom visitor spending andbusiness visitors are perhapsmore important to theeconomy than holidaymakers, particularly whensuch travel facilitatesknowledge transfers andbusiness connections.Accommodation and foodservices businesses tend tobe larger than businesses inother sectors, as shown infigure 47. Only a third ofbusinesses are singleoperator, and on averagethere are 6.3 employees perbusiness unit.Tourism has a relatively low location quotient in several parts of the Waikato region, asshown in figure 48. It is, however, a more significant industry in Thames-Coromandel,Waitomo and Taupō districts and the portion of Rotorua district within the Waikatoregion.Doc # 2069885 Page 43
