Most providers of high valueservices in the Waikato regionare located in or near Hamiltoncity. Waikato and Waipa districtsare the next largest exporters ofhigh value services, followed bythe urban area of Taupō district,as shown in figure 41.Nearly two-thirds of high valueservices businesses in theWaikato region are sole operatorbusinesses, as illustrated byfigure 42. There are, however, 14business units with more than100 employees each.There are many small high valueservices operations around theregion, as shown in figures 43and 44. The majority of highvalue services employees are inHamilton city (5840). Figure 44: Hamilton location quotient andemployees – high value servicesFigure 43: Location quotient and employees– high value servicesHigh value services are included in the broader category of commercial services thataccounted for approximately $2.9 billion, or just over five per cent, of New Zealandexports in 2009. 99 The commercial services sector is expected to play a key role inlifting New Zealand’s economic performance and exports given the growing globaldemand for expertise and specialised services and the lack of typical natural resourceconstraints (i.e. land availability and environmental pressures). 1003.3.7 AquacultureAquaculture – both marine and land-based – is a small sector currently, but has thepotential to grow significantly, with a combination of sustainable natural resources andregulatory reform. As an additional primary industry, it offers an opportunity to broadenfood manufacturing in the region.The waters off the Coromandel Peninsula are second only to the Marlborough Soundsfor aquaculture production, with 24 per cent of national mussel production and nearly20 per cent of farmed oysters coming from the peninsula’s 925 hectares of long-linemussel farms and 70 hectares of inter-tidal oyster farms. 101 Marine farms and marinefarming zones in the Waikato region are shown in figure 45.According to a 2011 report, aquaculture contributed an estimated $31.4 million of GRPto Waikato in 2010/11. This is comprised of aquaculture farming (approximately 43 percent of total) and aquaculture processing (approximately 57 per cent). In terms ofemployment, there are an estimated 432 full time equivalents resulting fromaquaculture and its supplying industries located in the region.
