Five of New Zealand’s six largest forest owners/managers as at 2010 79 , including thethree largest, own plantation forests in the <strong>Waikato</strong> region. These include: Hancock Natural Resource Group: is the largest forest manager in NewZealand. It manages approximately 257,000 hectares of forests 80 on behalf of anumber of investment clients, including forests near Taupō. Kaingaroa Timberlands: is the second largest forest owner/manager in NewZealand and owns the 189,000 hectare Kaingaroa Forest, located betweenRotorua and Taupō. 81 Matariki Forests: is the third largest forestry company in New Zealand withapproximately 130,000 hectares of plantations across the country, includingforests in the northern <strong>Waikato</strong>, Thames-Coromandel and Hauraki districts. 82Ernslaw One: owns approximately 100,000 hectares of forests in a number ofregions, including one located at Whangapoua in the Coromandel Peninsula. 83Crown Forestry (MAF): administers 47,130 hectares of forests throughout theNorth Island and the West Coast of the South Island. 84The land underlying the forests is both freehold and leasehold to different degrees ineach case. The leasehold land is leased from the Crown, Māori incorporations andother parties. 85Major wood and paper manufacturing employers in the <strong>Waikato</strong> region include: Carter Holt Harvey Kinleith Mill: located near Tokoroa, Kinleith is Carter HoltHarvey’s largest mill and the <strong>Waikato</strong> region’s largest processing site,producing bleached and unbleached softwood kraft pulp and a range oflinerboards and medium used in packaging. 86 Wood products such as structuraltimber, laminated veneer lumber and plywood are also manufactured here. 87 Tenon Manufacturing: is a specialised producer of radiata pine clearwoodproducts such as pine lumber, pine boards, pine mouldings and outdoor woodproducts 88 , located in Taupō. Tenon Manufacturing produces more than100,000 m 3 of product annually. 89Southern Cross Forest Products: its wholly owned subsidiary Thames Timberwas founded in 1948 and produces 80,000 m 3 of lumber and select boardannually. 90South <strong>Waikato</strong> and Taupō districts produce 29 and 26 per cent respectively of the<strong>Waikato</strong> region’s forestry, wood and paper exports each, as illustrated by figures 35and 36.
