The panel report highlights a number of areas where NewZealand can lift its game including: increasing the connections between research organisations and businesses changing the innovation culture to promote greater commercialisation of newideas developing capability and skills to bridge the gap between research andbusiness, and focusing government R&D investment to build scale in key sub-sectors of thehigh-value manufacturing and services sector. 763.3.5 Forestry and logging and wood and paper manufacturing 77527,400 hectares of plantation forests (30.1 per cent of the national total) are located inthe central North Island wood supply region, which encompasses most of the <strong>Waikato</strong>and Bay of Plenty regions. 78 This figure excludes the Coromandel Peninsula, which isalso in the <strong>Waikato</strong> region. At least 20,000 hectares of plantation forests are locatedthere also. Almost 3.8 million cubic metres of exotic timber was harvested in the<strong>Waikato</strong> region in 2011, approximately 15.7 per cent of New Zealand’s total, accordingto the Statistics New Zealand Agricultural Production Census.
