Almost two-thirds ofexports from these manufacturingsectors are produced in Hamilton city,with small amounts in other districts, asshown in figure 31.Manufacturing in the <strong>Waikato</strong> region isdominated by small firms, as illustratedby figure 32. The average number ofemployees per business unit is 5.2.This presents a challenge to <strong>economic</strong>growth because it is larger firms whichtend to start exporting internationally.Smaller firms may lack economies ofscale and specialised skills required tocompete internationally.There are many small manufacturingoperations around the region, asshown in figures 33 and 34. Themajority of manufacturing employeesare in Hamilton city (4,830).
