Wallace Meats: is a subsidiary of Wallace Corporation, with beef processingplants at Thames and Waitoa. 60AFFCO: this meat company began operations in 1904. It operates aslaughtering and processing facility and rendering plant at Horotiu. 61Prolife Foods: was founded in 1984 and its head office is located in Hamilton.Its product range includes nuts, dried fruits, muesli bars, cereals, grains,chocolates, confectionery and more. 62Figure 24 illustrates exports of thefood manufacturing sectors from the<strong>Waikato</strong> region. These sectors makeup 33 per cent of international exportsand 14 per cent of inter<strong>regional</strong>exports from the <strong>Waikato</strong> region.Hamilton city produces 20 per cent ofthe output value but a third of foodexports. Matamata-Piako district is thesecond largest food product producerwith 26 per cent of exports, and Waipadistrict is third with 14 per cent.There are many small-scale foodmanufacturing businesses in the<strong>Waikato</strong> region with five or feweremployees, as illustrated by figure 25.But there are also 20 businesses withmore than a hundred employees. Ofthe 7,500 employees in food andbeverage manufacturing, 70 per centare employed by the largest 20business units.
