There were 5,882 dairy farmingbusiness units in the Waikato regionin 2010. The majority (58 per cent) ofthese are owner-operated and haveno other employees, as shown infigure 18. As dairy farms becomemore automated, larger herds can berun with fewer staff so dairy farmingis unlikely to be a large source ofemployment growth. However, employment growth may occur inlinked sectors such as services toagriculture and dairy processing.Figure 18: Dairy farming business units by numberof employees (2010)A location quotient measures the relative importance of a sector in a geographic area 44 .Figure 19 shows district-level location quotients and the area-units where people in thedairy cattle farming sector are employed. Note the circles do not represent individualbusinesses but the total number of employees in the sector in an area-unit. Almost allrural districts except for Thames-Coromandel in the Waikato region have a highlocation quotient for dairy cattle farming compared with the national average. Thehighest is in Ōtorohanga district, which does not have the highest absolute number ofdairy farming employees but does have the highest proportion of the labour forceemployed in dairy farming.Figure 19: Location quotient and employees – dairy cattle farming44Location quotients are explained in more detail in chapter 9.3.Doc # 2069885 Page 23
