Health and Education is the largest sector byemployment share, as illustrated by figure 6. Wholesale and retail trade constituted 16per cent of total employment but only 12 per cent of GRP. Business services on theother hand employed only 13 per cent but added 16 per cent to GRP.Page 14 Doc #: 2069885
Figure 6: Employment by sector including owner-operators (2011)2.4 UnemploymentUnemployment rates have tracked fairly closely to the national rate for the past 25years, with occasional spikes and troughs, as shown in figure 7. This could indicatethat the Waikato region is very susceptible to the effect of recessions and periods ofhigh growth or be explicable by events outside normal cycles, e.g. new firm openingsand redundancies from firm closures etc. Unemployment in the region has tended to belower than Auckland but higher than Wellington and Canterbury.
