Wintec takes a dual approach to Research, Development and Transfer (RDT) thatsupports educational excellence and RDT-informed educational programmes relevantto industry and provides a scalable portfolio of RDT services focused directly onindustry requests for RDT (such as the RDT Voucher Scheme, long term RDTpartnerships with industry, and RDT facilities where Wintec focuses directly onindustry-funded RDT). This dual approach aims to unlock optimal value and providesynergies that would not be possible otherwise.Wintec has researchers from 11 schools and centres participating in research everyyear. In 2010, 118 staff participated in research and development projects.Prima Group Ltd was established in 2011 and has been tasked with commercialisingthe knowledge, know-how and intellectual property generated within Wintec. PrimaGroup is 100 per cent owned by the Wintec Foundation, a charitable trust set up for thelong term benefit of Wintec.This commercialisation may take the form of expertise within faculty that can be appliedto finding solutions to the practical problems of industry through consulting, or it may beshaping the resources that are used to teach tertiary students into a form that fits theneeds of industry practitioners through customised training.Prima Group Ltd views commercialisation of the practical inventions from <strong>Waikato</strong>inventors as core business and looks for ways to facilitate the development of ideas. Itdoes this by providing practical advice and services and by injecting seed capital intoprojects that it believes have merit. It also has a panel of experts to assess newinventions and ideas and will, where appropriate, introduce inventors to experts andpractitioners within Wintec schools to help.Services include:commercialisation of intellectual property, knowledge and know-howprovision of seed capital to early stage innovationfacilitation of industry researchinvestment in businesses that complement our visiondevelopment of blended educational and training resourcessupporting the growth and development of businesses in the communitydelivery of quality industry trainingprovision of employment outcome focused training programmesspecialist industry sector specific consulting servicessupport of local, <strong>regional</strong> and national <strong>economic</strong> development initiatives, andprovision of mobile and e-learning technologies.Wintec supports Prima Group Ltd with its research voucher programme, whichencourages people from industry to apply for pieces of research to be conducted withinthe institution. Industry can look to Wintec expertise in areas as diverse as health,trades, media arts, education, science, primary industries, engineering, sport science,business, information technology, social policy, hospitality, tourism and more. PrimaGroup Ltd offers the commercialisation vehicle for successful research outputs.Current projects include scientific outputs from the School of Engineering, Science andPrimary Industry, a humane self-reloading pest trap, a lightweight personal scaffoldingsystem, a unique safety platform ladder system, document management software, apersonal care device for the disabled, a rowing skiff that folds up into a car boot, arowing bicycle and a novel barge system.11.3.3 Waiariki Institute of TechnologyOne of Waiariki Institute of Technology’s performance indicators for 2011-2015 is“Strengthening applied research outcomes and technology transfer informed byDoc # 2069885 Page 135
